Discovery Bay Golf Club
About
Opened in 1925, Discovery Bay Golf Club, formerly known as Chevy Chase Port Townsend Golf Course, has the distinction of being the oldest public golf course in Washington. Besides its long history, it has also garnered acclaim as one of the best golf courses on the Olympic Peninsula. Situated on the shores of Discovery Bay, the layout enjoys panoramic mountain views spanning the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges. There is more to the course than scenery though. The classic design is challenging enough to appeal to low handicappers while still being accessible for beginners. The course's back nine is more challenging than the front, featuring challenging elevation changes and some tricky lies. Be sure to bring your camera for the breathtaking view on Discovery Bay Golf Club's 10th tee.

Excellent course except for the mud
Everything was fine except the course was quite damp which is what one should expect in Washington in December. Back nine is more like an upper nine with big elevation change and long walks from tee box to tee box.
Great place to play-excellent staff
I was late to my tee time because of traffic but the young man in the clubhouse understood and let me out as soon as I got there. You don’t get that kind of service at most courses if you are late some courses won’t let you play. Thanks again Discovery Bay Golf Course.
Good course but needs work
Good price for a Hot Deal. Course needs some TLC. Fairways were firm and several dry and hard. Greens were slow and several had bare spots. Walking the front 9 was fine, but back nine was a bit of a climb. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
Good value
played 18. got Hot Deal on Golf Now. Good bang for the buck. Not a fancy or luxurious coarse, but nice layout. Greens looked a little sketchy however putts seemed to roll pretty smoothly. Nice surroundings. Expect a fair amount of dust from the gravel cart paths in summer. Thoroughly enjoyed our round, and plan to return in the future.
Perfect conditions and different 9 holes
Although playing in a very dry period of time the course conditions were excellent. The club house area is mimalistic, but the staff is very friendly.
The first 9 holes are rather flat, but very nice and good views (ocean, see) and fair/forgiving. For the back nine you need good physical conditions as they go into the hills and are more narrow. We were glad renting a buggy for that.
We'ld play the course again being in this area
Happiness
Love the staff and the back nine, also dog friendly
Great place to practice.
Grinding at the range is great for a golfer but ideally a golfer would like to get all those repetitions but on real course conditions and lies. Well here you can do that. It’s usually wide open and the locals all practice a lot as well. Many times someone would come up behind me and just drive right passed me with a wave and a smile on to the next hole (just jumped me and went on to the next hole). while I was the one at fault and wasn’t paying attention because I was taking a few extra shots to practice the15 yd chip I just bladed across the green. A few holes later I caught up to him and he was doing the same thing out of one of the sand traps. He probably had taken 10 shots out of there and was in the process of re-taking the bunker. They have an ok range to warm up at and a small chipping and putting green but I would recommend just a quick warm up here and then on to the actual course for the real practice.
The story here is, as long as your respectful pay your due and your not holding anybody up; the staff and locals here will allow you to get as much practice anywhere on that property because many of them are doing the same. Also a well trained dog is allowed here as long as you prove to be able to pick up after it. On the back 9 you can let the dog off the leash alittle to roam free but again keep an eye on it and pick up the crap.
Lastly the greens are nice, traps and fringe well kept. The courses weakest attribute is its fairways. The fairways will play like shorter rough or fringe on really nice courses. So like I said it’s a great place for practice rounds as well as larger group scramble rounds as they will find times to fit in larger groups of five or six-soms.
Course was good for the price.
Fairways were mostly weeds that were mowed short but the putting surfaces were very good. No services such as food or drinks but it may have been because of the time of year. Thought the tip jar at the register was a little tacky. To be fair, we did not have a good experience because we drove on a couple of fairways and it did say cart paths only. On the 200 yard par 3 you could see where it funneled out from the cart path and we went. The man from the course came out and yelled at us which we did deserve. We tried to apologize but he wouldn't stop yelling. After about 5 minutes of trying to apologize we finally decided to leave. He said we did damage but we couldn't see anything. There was deep tire marks from someone else though about 10 feet off to the right of where we were.
Challenging historic course
You better be good with your driver and have some course knowledge! Greens are small, subtle and hard to read. Be aware of slope. A lot of elevation change and long par 4s.
The views can be nice. Usually quiet and you can get lost in your thoughts. Been playing here everytime I visit PT. Love this place! Staff are always friendly too! And you can bring your dog for a round, no extra charge!
Loved it
One of the best kept secrets in the whole State of WA. This course is a special place! Put it on your bucket list.
