Great Course
Royal New Kent is a great great golfcourse. The overall condition of the course was excellent and the pace of play was outstanding. Recommend to any experienced golfer to give RNK a try, but from the Members Tees your first time. You will like it.
A true Jewel
Royal New Kent is one of my favorite courses here in central Virginia. The unique design of the course presents many challenging and creative shots.
Love the challenge
This is my second time playing and the greens are great, very well maintained. Not your normal course. It will test your club selection ability and aim. Beautiful views at each tee box.
Thank you for the great review. New owners bought the course in 2018 and brought back two of Mike Strantz's original team members to do an eight month renovation. The course is back to its original condition. Strantz designed and built a unique place. Hope you can make it back soon to 'Golf Ireland in Virginia'.
Stunning absolutely stunning
Stunning course! Incredible in every way and on every hole. What a majestic work of art. Challenging but fun and impressive. Goes down as one of our best ever golf experience. Thank you to the staff and team who made this experience memorable. I even forgot my wallet in the cart and they found it and saved it for me. An honest group as well that I am truly grateful for. Thank you!!
Thank you for the great review. Strantz designed and built a beautiful place. A place that new owners restored in 2019 back to its original condition. It's Irish design is very unique and never boring. Hope you can make it back soon.
Always a Thrill
I love RNK--and it's not for the faint of heart because it is extremely challenging. There are a lot of blind shots, elevation changes, and bad bounces in the fairways due to the slopes. Generally, you need to take extra club either because of wind you can't feel, an uphill shot, carries, or false fronts on several of the approach shots. I've played it enough over the years (before and after it's reopening) that I know which side of the hole to favor. The course was in good shape, except the bunkers needed a little TLC. The greens were running a tad on the quick side and seemed to have a little more subtle movement then I remember. The only reason I rated it a 4 vs 5 was because there was a foursome in front of me that had a hole open in front of them after #2 and I believe 2-3 holes open after #5. I finally played through them on #8 and didn't catch up to the group in front of them until #15. They weren't marshaling, but I did tell the starter how slow they were when I made the turn. The course was simply too hard for their skill level. It made for a "hit-and-sit" front 9. RNK is a favorite and I will continue to return, but will try to play during the week instead of the weekend for a better experience.
Beautiful course in great shape
Everything about the round was excellent. The course was in the best condition I have seen it in years (and it is usually in good condition). They are not sending groups out on top of each other, so wasn’t rushed or slow. Overall, it was a great day of golfing. Favorite hole is #17, tough, but so fun to go for it!
Challenging, Professional
Great challenge. Best overall staff i've encointered. Thourough, helpful with a great pro shop. Keep the ball in the fairway. There are plenty of fairway lies that are not flat and pose their own challenges. Roigh unforgiving . Geeat layput. Highly recommended.
Thank you for the great review! Mike Strantz designed and built from scratch only seven courses. Royal New Kent,, he modeled after two of his favorite Irish courses, Royal County Down and Ballybuinion and it's very unique and never gets boring. Hope you can make it back soon.
The worst
I’ve played on some of the best courses in the Southeast.
This course is unfairly difficult because there is no GPS the scorecards have no layouts. You are on most holes playing blind. It’s probably a good course if you are a regular but as someone playing it the first time from out of town I left after 9 holes and went somewhere else.
Great course but a few issues
One of my favorite courses. Great Strantz course brought back from the dead. Fairways coming around, bunkers need a bit of attention. Greens were a bit slow compared to last time I played. I am a bit worried about some very invasive weeds getting into the greens, especially par 3 15th. They need to be taken care of soon. Range was closed and those in clubhouse didn’t know why. I would hate to see RNK go back in conditions when the folks there did such a wonderful job bringing it back. Didn’t have time for the pub this time but it has been good in the past.
Nothing Like We Have Ever Experienced - Breathtaking
April 14, 2022 – Just completed our 7-day golf trip to beautiful Virginia playing Williamsburg National Yorktown and Jamestown Courses, Ford's Colony, Golden Horseshoe Green and Gold courses, The Club at Viniterra finishing at Royal New Kent Golf Club.
Our travel group typically plays 30 to 37 new courses each year in the USA, Canada and Europe. Never have we experienced anything like Royal New Kent Golf Club. The front 9 is unlike anything we have played. Reminiscent of landscapes in Ireland, each hope has its own unique and incredible beauty, with heather and other grasses that boarder pot bunkers and well-guarded bunker greens. Elevation changes on each hole will challenge your club selection and wits as target golf is required here. Rolling greens are generous in size.
The back 9 is uniquely different from the front 9 resembling Irish links. Wider fairways will allow you hit bombs off the tee but be aware target golf on second or third shots is required as rolling greens are undulating, some with high elevation changes so pin seeking shots are required to score well.
Thank you for the five star review. Mike Strantz only designed seven courses from scratch and his designs are never boring. Strantz modeled RNK after two of his favorite Irish courses, Royal County Down and Ballybuinion. New owners in 2018 brought back two of Strantz's team that built the course 1997 and completely renovated the course and put it back to its original look and feel. The Irish design makes for a very unique experience. Hope you can make it back soon.
Very challenging course!
Teed off at 11:50, about 40 degrees and 15 to 20 mph winds... WOW! Had a wonderful time though. Course was in the best condition I've ever played it in. Always very challenging and enjoyable. Will definitely return because I had par on the last two holes!
Great review! Thank you! Mike Strantz, the course designer, was a student of Alister MacKenzie and MacKenzie's principles of great golf course design. Strantz incorporated that philosophy into RNK, for example making holes appear harder then they are and great courses are appreciated more, the more you play them. Strantz provides.a conservative option route on each hole along with a route to "go for it" which makes it fun to play. New owners completed a major renovation in 2019 which brought it back to the course it was when it opened in 1997. Hope you can make it back again soon.
Thank you Robert for the great review. Since we bought the shuttered course in 2018, and went through an eight month renovation, reviews like yours go a long way to helping us get the word out that our Mike Strantz course is back. Its a beautiful and unique design. Hope you can make it back soon.
