Farewell for now

This was a go-to track for me when in the Fairfax area 10-15 years ago, but it will be closing 5/19/19 for budgetary concerns in Prince William County. The conditions are of a course that hasn't been maintained recently, go figure. It was always an interesting layout if you didn't mind the forced carries and occasional circus putt. Lots of dramatic tees and elevation changes. For a 6200 yard course from the blue tees, it sure feels a lot longer. But with unmown rough and dirt tee boxes, erosion, downed trees, poa annua popping up, it was all rather sad. But I'm glad I had a chance to run the track one last time and will remember the good days and rounds gone by.

General ridge

Course was not in that great of condition, however it was beautiful outside and the staff was friendly. Driving range was closed, I got there early to practice. Staff did allow me to leave early.

Good course to knock the rust off

Good layout of course. Pin placements were very tough on most holes. Greens were not yet in the best condition.

Challenging, Hilly Course

As a municipal course, General's Ridge suffers from the common limitations, such as uneven fairway turf, poorly maintained greens and hard bunker sand. But its extremely challenging layout — see the slope numbers — and long par 3s, many from severe uphill and downhill tees, make this a good test of your golf game. Driving accuracy is a must to score well.

Do not play here

Was not thrilled playing this course, but the group I play with wanted to try it out. The conditions were absolutely terrible. There was no grass on many tee boxes/fairways. Bunkers were in terrible shape. Cart paths were falling apart, and was a rather bumpy ride all the way around the course. The layout makes for it to be a really tough course, so I think I would enjoy the course if it wasn't for the awful conditions, but i would never recommend this course. Take your money somewhere else. I would take a guess as to say this course will go under over the next couple years. I played on Saturday morning, and I saw two other groups.

Tight fairways and challenging greens

Course is suffering from a tough summer. Tee boxes are a bit of a mess and the fairway is a little thin. Didn't prevent a solid round but I'll be back once its had a chance to recover.

Course is very tight with lots of trees. If you spray you'll pay. Greens are heavily contoured and run true. I got off early so no problems with pace. Staff was very friendly.

Challenging public course!

General's Ridge bills themselves as the toughest course in Northern VA, and they may be right. The slope from the tips is 143. It's not overall long, but it is very narrow, hilly, and has several blind shots. Not for a player who struggles to hit it straight off the tee! The fairways were OK, greens were great, but the tee boxes and bunkers were not in great shape. After recent rains, the water collected, making cart paths slick and lots of mud balls. #1 handicap hole in VA is here, requiring a tee shot of 190-220, and a 170+ approach that plays 2 clubs longer because it is straight uphill. Worth checking out if you want a challenge and are prepared to lose a few balls.

Challenging

I would recommend if you play this course to play the upward tees to make it a little less challenging

Very Strange Set Up

Very weird course. It only plays about 6200, but the overall topography of the course just makes it not enjoyable. If you miss a fairway by 3 yards you are in the woods. Greens are either 20 yards uphill or downhill on every hole. Just an unfair course to be honest.

Bring your flyswatter

It’s not a bad course if they’d put some money into it. Bugs constantly in your face is different. That aside the cart paths are so in need of some more asphalt it’s like you can’t drive off the path or you might break the cart trying to get back on.
Greens are very sloped and sandy. So very fast and break all over. Hard to read. Which I wouldn’t mind if they didn’t errate them so much.

Love it, but go early

This is one my favorite Prince William County courses. It is definitely challenging, with the greens having more undulations (and significant ones) than I care for. Three-putts are too common and would not be the case on “normal” greens. Totally unnecessary feature.

But wow...if you tee off between 11am and 3pm, plan on a 5hr round. When I play early, things move very well, and that’s what I’ll do from now on. Playing again this week, in fact.

Great value and it will test you!

Cart mandatory, bring your A game

This course is a real gem, but expect to be challenged on every shot. Narrow fairways, rolling hills, curvaceous greens ... Pay close attention to the course guide. Very well maintained and friendly staff. Ranger said hello a few times and gave us pointers on upcoming holes. Not a course for a quick round.

This was the worst round of golf I have ever played. The 1st hole tee time was 15 minutes late (understand sometimes that happens so not too upset about that). We had to wait on average 10-15 minutes per hole to tee off. We play 12 holes in 4 hours and 15 minutes and quit on hole 14. The pace of play was horrendous and the marshal did nothing to speed the three groups ahead of us up. There was a 4 some in front of us then a group of 7 which was playing so slow it was ridiculous. It looked like they teed off separately and then all 7 met up and played together. I will never play that course again, we asked for our money back and the lady in the club house said you should have spoken to the marshal. WELL where was he?? I saw him once sitting in the woods not paying any attention on what was going on. Was just a horrible experience all four of us ended up playing 12 holes and had to quit as it was just to slow and the pace was gonna be a 7 hour round which should never happen.

Couldn't have asked for a better day on the course. Early September felt like a fall morning. The course is challenging but well maintained, and the starter will give you a sheet with helpful hints for each hole. That sheet is worth reading. I am an average golfer, so I did lose a lot of balls, but the course and scenery made it worth it. The staff is great all around. The guy at the counter was raising money for the hurricane relief fund and gave us a discounted rate because of our donation. The starter who I think is also the manager, gave us a great feeling of being out there along with that sheet she gave us. She told us that the marshall knew the course extremely well and if we had any questions to flag him down when we saw him and he would help. we did see him, very friendly. The snack bar could use a few more options. We grabbed a large hotdog and some snacks. Beer selection is better than most courses. Know when coming here the challenges but enjoy the course, view and the staff.

Challenging, but gimmicky

This course has a unique layout that makes it utterly impossible for a first-timer to compete. Almost every hole is a dog leg or you face a tee shot where you cannot see the green. Multiple approach shots, even from the 100 yard range leave you no clue as to where the pin is. holes that seem quite easy on the scorecard are gimmicky and take driver out of your hands, even for the semi-skilled. A few tee shots are blind and the fairways so narrow you have to hit and hope. While it's certainly interesting, it sucks a lot of fun out of golf until, I hope, you've played it a few times.

The Lee Boys

The ranger allows groups of 8 to play. Obviously this slows things down. The group was inexperienced and had never been on a golf course before. When we asked the ranger what was going on he said "those are the Lee boys, they're always up to some kind of shenanigans". He said they were keeping up with the pace of play. Not true. Luckily we were able to play through them on a par 3 but this is ridiculous and shouldn't be tolerated. No 8-Somes!!
