A Great Value for the Money
My younger brother and I like to meet once or twice a year for golf marathons...54 holes..three times around the track. We are both decent golfers. He sports a 10 handicap to my 15. He has to drive up from Temple Texas, and I have to drive down from Grapevine. This course lies dead center between the two.
But it wan't just convenience sake that made this such a wonderful experience. The course is an old Leon Howard Design, and back in the late 60's Leon Howard was designing a lot of courses for a lot of resorts and country clubs. He has always had an eye for making a course both fun and challenging. Sadly, the previous owners let this track go to seed. The new owners have worked hard to bring this course back to life.
Admittedly, the fairways are still pretty rough, but the greens have come along nicely. There are only two of them that are needing a little extra TLC. All of them, however, including these two, roll very very true. Because they are plateaued, they can really make you work for your putts.
The staff treated us like a million bucks while we were there, and they gave us the nickel tour of the clubhouse as it stands, as well as where it will be by the end of the year.
For the money you pay to play this course, it is a very good deal. Friendly staff, and devious greens. I can't wait for the fairways to be hitting on all cylinders, and considering the new irrigation lines being laid out etc., I believe that by mid-summer people will be wondering why they haven't heard of this hidden gem before.
She's a diamond in the rough for now, but I see a great course if they keep up the TLC, because two years ago---you would have had to pay me to play it. --Great staff in all repsects. I wish these new owners well, as they are undertaking a large turnaround story in earnest, and doing a good job of it. I recommend you check it out, and keep an open mind as to where it is now vs. where it was a few years ago, and how far it has come in the meantime. It is definitely headed in the right direction.
Cow Pasture golf
Lake Whitney looks to have been a decent golf course in the past. Today the course appears to receive little if any maintenance. The layout is somewhat interesting, although very poorly marked. The greens are postage stamps - and hard as a rock. Fairways also hard as cement. Your only hope was to club down and hope and try and guess the bounce and roll. I payed $10 bucks to play it and went primarily to practice. If you are looking to play real golf - this is not the place!!
Once this course was nice
It's winter time with dormant greens speeds were fast. At one time this course was nice, sadly it has been allowed to run down. Little maintenance has been performed as evidenced from the clubhouse roof. The layout in its day would have been outstanding. Oh to go back when the course had stair step water features with the lake in the background would make this a top tier golf course and a beautiful postcard. The course needs work, if the greens could be saved, the tee boxes dressed up, and the fairways mowed it would be a decent course still. Would play it once more with grass on it, but the course needs considerable attention.
Course Closed
Booked a 1pm tee time and arrived at 12:15. We began to get our clubs out of the car and was approached by an employee who told us the course closes at noon on Tuesdays. I was so happy to hear this as the course looked like it had not been groomed or watered in years. The clubhouse desperately needs to be torn down and rebuilt.
Course was hard as cement.
Staff was great. She was very kind and friendly. The course on the other hand was not well kept. The building is falling in and the grounds were in poor condition. The best thing about our round was the views are beautiful.
Cow Pasture Golf
Conditions pretty rough. Greens had grass but bumpy.
Course Conditions
Fairways are as hard as cart paths. If you can hit it straight, you will have drives that make you feel like you can play on the PGA, because they will roll a mile. Greens were average. Layout of course is awkward to say the least.
A low cost round of golf
Before you drive out I will worn you this course is not perfect. However, the greens are watered as well as the area around them. The course is well mowed. You get a lot of extra bounce on the fairway, but even though they are dry they are still mostly covered with grass. I found the course challenging, but fun and would suggest that if you are somewhat near by to try it out.
overgrown and no bunkers
The course was so rocky, t-boxes were weedy and overgrown, fairways were un kept. Paid for 18 holes and left after 9. would not go back and would not recommend.
Good Track
Played yesterday with a buddy from Austin. This is a good meeting place between Coppell and Round Rock if you want to meet and play. Course is solid but a bit tricky until you have played it a time or two. Hit many good shots that did not work out because I did not know the lay of the land. Greens good, Tee boxes good, Fairways okay. Pro Shop staff kept us waiting while she spoke on a personal call for about 3 or 4 minutes. Members ignored us and got rude when we asked if they only have the Championship tee markers out on a regular basis or if yesterday was an exception. I will go back and try it again because the golf is good.
Greens okay but need water fairways and tee boxes in terrible shape Sometimes couldn't tell the fairway from the ruff.
I played this course in 1997 and there has been next to no change in the shape of the course. The green where not bad but sure could use some water. The fairways as times you couldn't distinguish them and the rough. The layout of the course was good. The price that I paid was really good but the golf cart was in really bad shape. You really had to watch the steering on it and the shock or springs where worn out. If a person wanted to get out for cheap round of golf with a cart this is okay but don't expect too much. Some short par 4's one really long par 3 off the whites was 220 yards. On the bag two par fives are a good challenge . The course could be a really nice course if some work and water was put into it.
