Nice Owners, Poor Course
A little tough to write this because of how nice the owners were but I can't say I would make the drive back to play here even for a lower green fee.
1: I called the clubhouse the morning we were playing to ask about course conditions because there was some rain in the area the night before. I was told the course was in great shape and that it was a little wet but not muddy, to come out. When we arrived I could instantly see that this might have been an exaggeration as you could tell from the parking lot there was standing water on the course, mud everywhere, and we were told the range was closed because it was too wet. A little annoying but not really a huge issue, hit the putting green while we waited on the last of our group to show up.
2: Once we paid/got carts we were told it was cart path only which isn't a big deal except I would say only 50% of the course actually has a concrete cart path or even a worn area where you can tell where the cart path should be. Several times we were driving on what we thought was a cart path to end up driving in to a mud pile headed the wrong direction. Add that with the wet/muddy conditions and there were ruts all over the place from carts driving all over the course.
3: The layout of the course is actually not bad and has some potential to be a challenging and fun tight course but the conditions just ruined it. Bad tee boxes with little to no grass and several tees set up on awkward side hills and had some weedy rough grass growing. The fairways were okay but no real consistent grass and standing water around just made it worse. Greens were in pretty bad shape. I'm sure the wet and cold hasn't helped with grass growth but muddy and bumpy greens were just tough to deal with.
Overall with some time, money, and effort I think this could be a nice little gem of a course but it really needs some work to become something worth playing because right now it is not. Other than the miscommunication with calling about course conditions the owners were really nice to talk to though and I wish them the best on getting this course turned around for the better.
Great Course great Price
I really enjoy this course. Ive been a member for quite awhile but really enjoy it more now with the improvements.
Thank you very much for your kind words. We appreciate you.
Has a chance, but lot's of changes need to be made
I have to be honest... the owners are so nice so it pains me to write this. I have played here at least 5 times now. I thought they were going in the right direction, but it has gone back to being an unplayable course... here is why.
This course is in horrible shape. I played a few weeks ago (Aug 2021). They need to fire their current maintenance/mowing crew and hire a new one. Tons of dead grass from mowing left everywhere. The fairway is like a light rough. The rough is like a heavy rough... and the heavy rough is unplayable. The tee boxes/greens are in even worse shape. One of the holes doesn't even have a green or a temp green. They just threw a flag in the fairway. Some tee boxes are non existent so you're teeing up in the rough.
There is zero reason this course should be full price right now, especially when you can play much nicer courses within a 30 min radius that are the same price if not cheaper. Other courses offer discounts when the course is under repair, and Deer Run is clearly under repair. They need to realize just how bad the condition is.
One positive is pace of play. There are hardly any golfers around so getting to take my time was nice, but it makes sense why the course was not so busy. Once again management is nice and I wish them well but they are putting their money into the wrong places for this course.
Please get a competent maintenance crew that knows what they are doing. I wouldn't let these guys handle residential landscaping let alone a golf course.
The Course is in excellent shape. Greens are one of the best around.
Good and getting better.
I am very happy with the improvements to the course. It is night and day since the new owners took over. Still some work to be done, but they are well on their way.
Thank you for your review. Appreciate it very much.
Thankfully it was cheap
Would be a 1 star were it not for the GolfNow deal. It’s not good when you’re punished for a great shot. Hit a ball in the fairway and your ball is in 1 inch deep grass. Kind of like a permanent rough. Tee boxes, fairways and greens need a lot of work. Layout was decent but needs some serious love.
We had a lot of rain recently and couldn't catch up on mowing as the mowers would get stuck in the Course. Right now, we are fully caught up.
Worst conditions we ever played under
This is a s not even a golf course.
The fairways were deep and you could not locate your ball. The grass was cut after it looked to be 18 inches tall and all the clippings were on the course in clumps. Honestly this place should not even be open. Many of the tee boxes were in horrible condition and the greens were even worse, some were 1/2 dirt. The front 9 was in sad shape...the back 9 was worse. I would not call this a golf course. We should have known it was bad when the staff asked if we were from out of town ....
Significant amounts of rain in the last few months put us behind on our mowing as our machines would get stuck where flooded. This caused grass to grow taller. Just recently we got caught up, mowed all the tall grass and burnt all the clippings.
We did loose parts of two greens in the snow storm in winter. We are still waiting for springs that come from South of Houston where they haven't been able to cut sprigs due to flooding. All the remaining greens are in excellent shape.
Thank you for a nice review. Appreciate it very much.
If I Could Rate Lower I Would
1. Not maintained at all, fairways had ankle high grass. If you missed the fairway AT ALL, your ball was lost in knee high grass. Greens are 75% dead and sandy. Tee boxes look nothing more than 2 pieces of PVC Pipe just thrown in a pasture somewhere. The smell out there is horrible, dead animal carcases and skeletons all throughout the course.
2. 4 Man groups???? There's were several groups of 8-10 people all playing the same hole at the same time, holding up play the whole time we were there.
3 Carts were horrible, breaks did not work and took literally 20 feet to stop. Cart paths we're almost undrivable for most of the course with giant holes and missing concrete throughout.
I wouldnt play here again if it was free, and would not reccomend this course to my greatest enemy.

We do agree that the cartpaths are not complete and some areas are damaged.
We have to disagree on a few false statements: There are no PVC pipes on Tee Boxes but have painted PVC caps as tee markers, there are no animal carcasses or skeletons. Generally the team size never exceeds 4.
Needs Help
I feel like this course has seen better days. Some great scenic views of the lake but the fairway and greens are not in good shape. It's not good when you hit a great shot but you can't find your ball because the rough and the fairway look the same. This course needs some TLC.
Relentless rain and flooding set us back with mowing as the mowers would get stuck in the Course. The fairways and rough have been mowed well and right now we are in good shape.
During the snow storm we lost parts of two greens. We are still waiting for springs from south of Houston where they still haven't been able to cut them due to water in the field. All the remaining greens are in excellent shape.
Beautiful course on Lake Tawakoni
This course has been around for 40 years, but the new management has really been turning it around. They cleared the trees so you can see the lake when you golf, and are improving the greens every time I come. Definitely a unique spot that has a lot of character.
Thank you for a wonderful review. Thank you very much.
Awful
Worst course ever. Avoid with a passion. Only good thing was price and friendly staff. Terrible.
The worst ever
I have been playing golf for 11 years and 50 plus golf courses, this is the worst course that I have ever played. Dry bald spots every where from tee to green. New owner just took over the course last September. Wish them the best of luck.
This is James with the Golf Course. We are in a transition from winter to spring and the bermuda grass is just coming out of dormancy, it is still not yet green in many areas. We are doing a lot of work to improve the course. We had sprayed the greens and fairways and all the foreign grass and weeds are gone. The dead/dying trees had been removed over the winter and now trees are being pruned. Today we are aerating the greens and top dressing. We are in constant improvement and will be one of the best courses in the DFW area in due time.
Very nice review. Thank you.
Thank you Chris. You are going to see constant improvement here at the Course.
New Management Super Course
Used to be an average course hence the previous negative reviews, but new management has been putting in a lot of work improving the greens and the fairway. The trees were trimmed to make the view of the lake better, better snack options now, more carts, and overall a much better place to look at. Also very friendly staff.
No one can ask for more. Thank you for a great review. Appreciate it.
Ok for the price
The greens were in ok condition but the t boxes and fairways were below average. The layout is nice but course conditions were definitely below average.
Thank you very much. Appreciate you.
Very Nice golf course
Good value for the money. Very Scenic.
Thank you very much. We appreciate you.
If I could give less than 1 star I would
Absolutely terrible course. Decided to try somewhere new about an hour from home, mistakes were made. The course hadn’t been mowed in weeks, at least. The greens were half dead, covered in sand. The tee boxes were uneven and felt like valleys. The cart paths were so broken that I have whiplash from bouncing so much. And to top it all off the breaks on the golf carts didn’t even work. If you wanted to slow down you better make sure to hit the breaks 50 yards early.
This course wasn’t worth 20 dollars per person. I wouldn’t play it for 5 dollars per person. You’d lose a ball in the fairway to overgrown weeds or limbs and sticks everywhere.
If you’re thinking about playing here for the first time, don’t.

Agree that the cartpaths are not complete and needs repair.
Not worth the drive or the money
Overall this country course was in shocking condition, the fairways were often not much different to the rough. The cart path nonexistent ion on most of the course. The greens were very bumpy and patchy with clumps of weeds growing on. them.
There were wood fires burning on pasts of the course to eliminate accumulated wood/trash.
The owners were very friendly and elicited feedback, unfortunately we were not able to have much positive to say. Golf GPS’s did not work on the course as the yardage had not been updated. Inconsistent yardage markers on the the course.
The golf carts and country/lake setting were good.
Not worth the drive or green fees from Dallas.

Agree that the cartpaths need some work.
From the review, it is clearly the rain and the mud that caused discomfort for the reviewer. Rain is an act of God but the blame seems to be on the Course and seems to make the Course undesirable forever. It is just unfounded and unfair.
We never try to deceive anyone. I have told everyone we had 1" of rain. There is not one green that is muddy.
It is true that we do not have cart-paths everywhere.
We work about12-15 hours a day 365 days a year to make this a better place. People tell us that this course is in the best shape it had been in 40 years.
Hope you realize that unnecessary negative reviews cost the businesses thousands of times more than what you paid. Why do this when we are trying hard to improve the course, the community and create local employment?
Lenny, you had mentioned to me that the course was "rough" and I asked it rough, there wasn't any suggestion other than about removing trees on #2 for lake view.
As I had mentioned then, we had been working relentlessly for the last 2.5 years and I have been told by many that had been playing here for 30-40 years that the course is in the best shape it had ever been. However, I understand that the Course isn't up to your satisfaction and you will not be coming back.
We take suggestions and reviews seriously and act on them. As we tell everyone, this Course gets a little better every single day.
