Editor's Note: Golf Course Closed.
Sheppard is now home to a new 18-hole disc golf course replacing the original golf course which closed in June 2014 due to a change in Defense Department policy.
An outstanding course designed by Pete Dye in 1957, Wind Creek is located on the grounds of Sheppard Air Force Base outside of Wichita Falls. Although primarily open to military personnel, the pro shop welcomes civilian play, and will help golfers hook up with someone who can accompany them on the course as a guest.
Locals will tell you that it looks much easier that it actually plays. The course is characterized by wide landing areas off the tee, 40 bunkers, three ponds, and a creek that runs through the course and affects five holes on the back nine. The 434-yard par 4 No. 4 is listed as the number one handicap, but No. 17 is a 600-yard par 5 that is particularly testy in the wind. All par 5s are well over 500 yards. One great feature of the course is the 24-hour lighted driving range.
Getting there : From Wichita Falls, take I-44 north to the exit for the Sheppard AFB. At the base entrance ask the guard for directions to the course.
