Mission del Lago Golf Course is nestled along the shores of Mitchell Lake across the flat lands of San Antonio’s south side. The golf course has a traditional links-style layout, meaning trees are sparse and windy, wide open spaces are abundant. The challenging golf course features more than a hundred sand traps and water hazards come into play on 10 holes. There are also multi-tiered greens, most of which are fast and undulating, and dry creek beds coming into play that require keen short game skills and careful strategy. The gusty Texas winds are probably the most challenging factor, though. Mission del Lago Golf Course is tricky, but five sets of tees give players of all skill levels a chance to play.

Mission Possible

As I write this review, most of the Alamo City Golf Trails (ACGT) courses are in horrible shape. I play them all fairly routine and have watched them all go from the best deal in town to somewhat of a local golfing joke. Ol' Brack is maintained the best, and Olmos is playing well right now. That being said, Mission del Lago is currently in decent shape as well. It has rebounded a bit and the fairways and greens are both very playable.

I write this review to say, go play it while you can.... because with ACGTs, who knows when it will return to Goat-Track status.

Note: I love the staff and restaurant.

Good course, beware of the mosquitoes

Nice modern looking course. Quite challenging. Plays pretty long from the tips. Greens are always in decent shape. A lot of elevation changes. Water is in play at a few holes. Fairways tend to be in decent shape. This course seems to be the greenest of all ACGT courses, probably because it gets more water. The only negative is that some of the tee boxes are in bad shape, especially on a couple of par 3's where one would like a nice flat grassy tee box. I've played here more than a handful of times, but last time was horrible, there was a nasty mosquito infestation all throughout the course and it was around noon time, when those little buggers should be sleeping. I probably won't return here, unless a) the course manages the mosquito problem, or b) gets colder so the mosquitoes won't be around.

Wide Open Course, Good Value

Mission Del Lago Golf Course is a municipal course set at the edge of the South Texas plains about 10 miles south of downtown San Antonio. Long hitters will enjoy playing the back tees at 7,044 yards, while other golfers have three options running down to 5,371 yards. The middle men’s tees at 6,378 yards have a 71.0 rating and 128 slope, so the course is moderately difficult. The terrain is flat with very little tree cover, most of which is near the creek that meanders through the course. There are a few small ponds scattered throughout the course, but they don’t really present a threat to scoring. We played during the second week of December, so the grass was mostly dormant and the creek bed was dry. The dry conditions had a positive impact on my game because my drives seemed to end up about 20 yards farther than I would expect at my usual Upper Midwest courses. The course is fairly wide open, and when we played the dormant Bermuda in the rough was less than two inches high, so no wayward balls were lost. The greens were surprisingly fast, some of them with subtle contouring and definitely sloping compared to the surrounding terrain. The opening holes are fairly straight and ordinary. On the 530 yard par 5 2nd hole, a creek crosses the fairway about 240 yards out from the middle men’s tee. As previously noted, some golfers may be surprised when they reach that creek. At 467 yards, the par 5 9th hole presents an eagle opportunity for long hitters using the middle men’s tee. A fairway bunker on the right about 200 yards out encourages a drive favoring the left side of the fairway, but a badly pulled shot here may end up OB. A long drive will leave a hybrid or fairway wood over a pond to the green. The safer option will be a layup over the creek bed that is about 100 yards short of the green to set up a lob or sand wedge approach to the green. The par 5 11th hole at 450 yards from the middle tees is another opportunity for eagle or birdie. A pond on the right pinches the fairway in at about 320 yards from the tee, and the fairway doglegs to the right at that point. You’ll want to favor the left anyway, because one of the largest trees on the course guards the green on the right side for those who want to go for the green and try carrying the pond on their second shot. The 175 yard par 3 16th has one of the more interesting greens, somewhat saddle-shaped with a high point in the middle that slopes right and left. A pond is situated short and right, but it shouldn’t catch anything but a really mis-hit tee shot. Coming from Minnesota, we really enjoyed December golf at this course and will include it in our plans for a future vacation.

Mission

I played this course three years ago and really enjoyed it. Though the staff was very nice, the course is in horrible shape. Several holes have crab grass on the greens. I played Cedar Creek the day before (which is gorgeous and would highly recommend!) and there is a definite disparity. Alamo Trail who I believe runs both courses,, is charging a six dollar difference between the two. It should be a $25 difference. When I played the temperature was 96 degrees. Pretty common for the Summer in San Antonio, there is no water on the course until the 14th hole so take your cooler! . The rough is way to high (6 inches on some holes)! I will never return! If I could rate this below poor I would.

way too long to play a round of golf

Played Mission del Lago for the 2nd and final time last week, I left on the 11th hole because I could not take the long wait between shots. There were no marshals to keep the pace reasonable, and we waited...and waited...between EVERY shot!.
The only other time I played there, I had identical experience. I won;t give it a 3rd try.

would have been a 5 hour round, at least, if I didn't leave early

I played Mission del Lago for the 2nd and last time a week ago. I left on the 11th hole because of the pace of play. 5 to 10 minute wait between shots. No marshals to move things along. The only time prior to this, I had the exact same experience. Clueless golfers are one thing; management not doing a thing about it is another. No marshals!
Won't return.

Some Progress is Good

It's two years later and thing are looking up a bit.
They have a fresh and friendly bundle of energy in the pro shop named Kylie and she is a real asset to this property.
Kylie was very welcoming and even went out of her way to open the restroom on the back nine that maintenance had forgotten.
Speaking of those "on the course" Trolls, the two mower drivers who
spent their working hours bothering golfers today need to be retrained. These employees are clueless about keeping a low profile.
The course itself has benefitted from all the new saplings that were planted several years ago and they should be awesome in a decade or so.
The greens had been punched about a week ago and are a long way from being back to normal.
This course still holds the title Fire Ant Central of Bexar County. The nasty ants are all over and some times hard to see.
The tees are still a work in progress but the fairways are thriving. Too bad it isn't all grass growing out there.
Holes #14 and #15 are two long par fives back to back that will challenge. Holes #4 and #7 have lakes in play but there are not a lot of water hazards here.
The fairways are thick and so there is not much roll and that adds to
the difficulty here.

Mission Del Lago

Nice course overall. Greens were a little bumpy. Fairways played well. Got started at 10 am and finished in less than 4 hours, with a threesome walking ahead of our foursome.

Horrible greens

I understand about the need to punch the greens it is just that these greens were horrible to try an putt on. If we had known how bad the greens were we would have booked a tee time somewhere else. I have played on greens that we’re recently punched but nothing this bad. Sorry but this was not worth the green fee we had to pay .

Greens are in bad shape

Pros: course is pretty long and somewhat forgiving off the tee, nice and challenging bunkers, GPS on the cart, it has a driving range. Con: the greens are in really really bad shap, real patchy with no grass in lots of spots. I probably will not return to Mission del Lago until the greens are in better shape.

Nice course

It took over 5 hours to play 18. We were in back of 2 threesomes. Would not let us thru. First threesome was playing from the furthest T's and were all over the place. Thank the Good Lord that the temperature was in the upper 70s or it would have been unbearable. The course was a great, fun layout and the greens were fair and true.

Way too slow

They had a company event start at 9am. My tee time was at 12:57pm. The company's last group teed off at 1:15pm. It took 1 hour and 40 minutes to finish 4 holes. I called and asked the front desk to speed the process, since Sunday's are my only days off and I had other errands to run. They sent out a Marshall to tell me they couldn't do anything about the pace of the game. They shouldn't plan the events this way. They should either set the players up on each hole, or not allow other people to make tee times behind the event. So frustrating. Only ended up playing the front nine.

Best layout in San Antonio!!!

If you have not played Mission in a while then you need to come out and enjoy the course. They have put a lot of work into this place and it is showing. The only thing its missing is a decent bar/grill. If you think you can best this course.....think again!!!! Come out here and prove me wrong!!!
