Set in the hills of southern San Antonio, the Kelly AFB Golf Course was originally built by military employees and volunteers as a 9-hole course in 1969, with a second nine added shortly thereafter. Water hazards come into play on 14 of 18 holes, and the plush fairways roll to greens that are pretty quick. Afterwards, players always remember the huge hill that offers an outstanding view of the city from the 9th and 18th tee boxes.
The design is known for its solid par 3s and difficult finishing holes. The two par 3s that stand out the most are the 200-yard No. 2, which requires a full carry of water to a green surrounded by sand and more wet stuff. No. 16 is 190 yards and plays to the smallest green on the course.
No. 16 is followed by the 275-yard No. 17, which plays straight uphill into a green that slopes drastically back towards the fairway.
Getting there : From Highway 90 west, take the General McMullen Drive exit and turn left. Drive a short distance to the military base, then ask the sentry for directions to the clubhouse.
