Southwestern University is Georgetown’s most recognized historic landmark, chartered as Texas University by the Republic of Texas way back in 1840, it is the state’s oldest college institution. The small campus has dignified charm, with white-stone buildings dotting the campus along with impressive new athletic facilities that have been added in recent years.
Part of the athletic expansion has unfortunately impacted the school’s old golf course, as the new soccer field wiped out three of the original nine holes. And if the university’s track record for expansion holds true, the remaining six will eventually be eliminated, despite reported plans to restore the 9-hole configuration.
Before World War II the course was apparently an 18-hole track, but was reduced to nine holes after the war. The school opened it to public play in the 1980s, and since then has averaged around 10,000 rounds per year.
The six holes that remain are short and offer minimal challenges. The greens are some of the smallest you’ll find, especially on the uphill, 326-yard No. 2. In fact, these greens reminded us of the burial-mound like round tops in Alpine and Marfa, hazards in themselves because they’re impossible to hit and leave excruciatingly difficult ups and downs.
Another part of the character at Kurth-Landrum is the maze of campus that leads you to the final two holes. Dirt cart paths weave in many directions, so follow the scorecard and enjoy any potential detours.
These last two holes are both par 3s, the final one considered the best looking hole on the course. A creek fronts the green, and your 150 yard shot must thread the needle between trees that line the hole. And while this green also slopes back-to-front, it’s larger than the others.
Getting there : In Georgetown off of I-35, take Hwy. 29 east 4 miles to the Southwestern University campus. The course is on the left side.
