A Great Municipal Course
Growing up in South Dakota and playing some junior golf, a few big events were played at Lakeview in Mitchell. I never qualified to play in those events, but kept Lakeview on my to-do list. Today was the day and I was thrilled with the experience.
Lakeview is one of the best municipal courses I have ever played. The City of Mitchell knows how to maintain a golf course. The fairways are perfect, the greens true and the bunkers nice. While the fairways are tree lined, they are wide enough to be playable, but will punish bad shots.
Lakeview is a mix of 9 original holes and 9 new holes. They are blended very well. I was only able to tell the difference because my buddy pointed out the older holes had smaller and less undulated greens. This didn't detract from the experience at all though.
The front 9 has 3 par 5s and 3 par 3s while the back 9 has the more traditional 2 par 5s and 2 par 3s. I believe 2 of the par 5s are reachable on a normal day. Today was cool and damp so the ball wasn't carrying.
The best hole, for me is #8, which is a short par 3. I am a sucker for a good short par 3. The green on #8 is fronted by a mound making it semi blind. The green also sits at an interesting angle related to the tee. Just a cool little hole.
I would like to see Lakeview add a blue/white combo set of tees that makes the course 6500 yards. There are 2 par 4s that measure over 460 from the tips. That's a long hole for normal mortals.
If you're near Mitchell, SD you should stop and play Lakeview. I think you'll be happy you did!
