Designed in the classic Scottish tradition, our masterful six-million dollar creation by Pete and P.B. Dye surrounds a sparkling 20 acre freshwater lake, bordered on the west by a 20,000 square foot colonial clubhouse.

The front nine winds through a pine forest in the manner reminiscent of the world famous Dye-designed Harbourtown Golf Course. Only 1/4 mile away from the ocean, the back nine is a more open layout similar to Dye's PGA West course and play is influenced by the prevailing ocean wind.

Prestwick features 8 holes where water comes into play.

Over 1.3 million cubic yards of earth were moved in creating towering Scottish berms, stairway and church pew bunkers, and undulating greens. In addition, more than 10,000 railroad ties were used to create another classic Dye design. Dramatic elevation changes ranging up to thirty feet add an exceptional feature to this coastal location.

Prestwick has been recognized as one of South Carolina's top golf courses and remains enjoyable with extremely limited non-member play and great year-round course conditioning.

Great challenging layout

Prestwick is a great challenging layout. It will leave you thinking on every shot. No two holes are alike. The front 9 is very reminiscent of Dyes design at Harbour Town. Generally speaking the fairways are pretty tight. Not a lot of room to hit the ball. And they are several really long par 4s. There are also several pretty challenging forced carries. Holes that stood out to me are 3 which is a long straight par 4. But long to the tune of 440 yards from the white tees. And pretty tight. 5 was an interesting par 3 with water cutting from right to left in front of a big 3 tiered green. 9 is a beautiful left sweeping par 5. With water all down the left. 11 was a really cool hole with a carry over a big waste area. 12 is a shorter par 3. But it’s all carry over a pond to a very undulating green. 17 is one of the hardest par 5s around. It’s 500 yards. The fairway is pretty tight. And gets tighter as you go. There is water on the left of the fairways. And just short of the green it cuts across the hole and to the right of the green. And 18 is a beautifully done long par 4 with water all the way up the right. The entire back 9 is just outstanding.
The conditions are good. Fairways are in good shape. Tees are ok. The greens are dormant. So there are some spike marks later in the day. But they are generally very true and smooth and very fast! It’s a course that it helps to have played before (I shot a much better score this time than the first time I played here in October) If you are in the area it’s definitely worth a play if you want a challenging course.

Tough Challenge

Played Prestwick today after having it recommended a couple of times. It was a very tough course. Maybe the toughest I’ve ever played. And I’ve played the Ocean Course at Kiawah (granted the day I played the wind was light) and Harbour Town. The greens are extremely firm and fast. Most are also very large and Dye-abolical. Lol. Seriously there is a lots of swales and movements in the green. There is some room out there to hit the ball. But if you hit it in the wrong place you’re done. You have to be on the correct part of the course. Many fairways are either built up with low areas around them or built between two sets of rolling mounds. It’s long, and it was wet so it played long. There are several forced carries. Many deep nasty bunkers around the greens as well as mounding. Plenty of water to find. It was a beautiful day and it was fun to play even though it wasn’t going to be a good score. That being said I don’t layer Farmstead the day before and thought it was in better shape for $23 less. Don’t take it the wrong way. Prestwick is not a bad course. But little things were off that I don’t expect if I’m paying between $80 and $100 like they charge. First almost all the tees were chewed up. Second, many fairways were wet but worse the rains had washed dead grass clippings into huge piles and they hadn’t been removed or blown off. Last the bunkers were almost unplayable. They hadn’t been raked since it rained last. And I had been there two days and hadn’t seen any rain. These things $100 courses don’t do. It’s a great course. Great fun. And a great layout. But if it’s gonna be a $100 course I’d like to see these things fixed.

One Of The Best Values But Not A 5 Star Course

When we were planning our courses to play on our vacation, we were intrigued that Prestwick was getting a 4.9 rating and the best golf course in the Myrtle Beach area by Golf Advisor. We decided to give it a try. We liked the course and it had an extremely attractive price of $62. However, it is not a 5 star course..

At Prestwick, you will get 12 holes with a modern architect look and 6 bland holes. After the 10th hole, holes 11-18 are outstanding. On the front nine, the memorable holes are 2, 4, 5 & 9. The condition of the course and greens were good. There is no GPS on the carts.

Here were some of the concerns we experienced at Prestwick...

1. The cart attendant said their greens were the fastest greens on the Grand Strand, running a stimp of 11. This was not true..
2. The cart attendant told us to go to the practice area and whenever you're ready, you can go off early. He never mentioned there was a starter. In the middle of the 1st fairway, the starter is chasing us down asking what we were doing.
3. On the first 3 holes, the mowers forgot to replace the 150 yard poles.
4. On our first 4 holes, we had a maintenance person who had a cart with a leaf/pine needle blower attached to it. He kept following us on every hole. It was so loud and ruined the experience on the opening holes. Suggestion, would be to start on the back side first or do this before people tee off.
5.They overwater the areas around the green or their drainage is poor. It was like quick sand. No balls would roll up or your ball would be plugged and you may not find it.
6. On the greens, you would see numerous old cup areas. Most I've ever seen on a course.

By far the worst experience at any golf course I have been to. Honestly, it was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had with any type of business. As a group of four we had one of the first tee times of the day. From what I observed all the groups to follow us were only groups of two. As a group of four, obviously we would take more time to play and we understood that and that’s why we allowed several groups to pass us without any complain. That was no problem at all we were there to enjoy a round of golf as a family. What was complete unacceptable was the rude starter who stalked and hassled us the entire time we were there. Shortly after starting our round the starter approached us for the first time stating “I’m sorry to tell you this, but other golfers are calling the pro store complaining about your pace. I can’t really say anything though, because y’all are within the time of play.” We stated we understood we were a group of four that had never played this course before and with two fairly inexperience golfers that were had no problem letting people pass us if they would like. We let the group behind us pass at this point. Not two holes later the starter approaches us again with the same statement as before. Again, we let people pass, but this time we let several groups pass. As we continued, if we saw a group was close to us we would let them play through as we didn’t want to hold them up. About the eight or ninth hole, the starter approached us again, but this time he became completely unacceptability rude and disrespectful. We had been playing for about 2 ½ hours, which I get is outside the timeframe of pace for this course, but we had let at least 5 groups pass at this point which slowed our pace down as well. The started made a comment about our pace and demanded we wait at the clubhouse after our ninth hole to let two more groups pass. Obviously, we had no problem doing this, but the way in which he spoke to us was totally disrespectful. He told me that he personally saw me tee off three times. This was untrue. I did tee off twice, because my first ball went into the water. Any golfer would have teed off again in this situation and has the right to do so. He stated “well you just need to drop your ball on the fairway and go.” We explained we had two newest golfers and he stuck his face out in my face and said “ma’am that’s not my problem.” This is where I lost it and couldn’t take anymore. I literally was almost in tears over the way he was talking to me. At this point my experience at this golf course was ruined. We complied with their request to stop at the clubhouse after the ninth house and waited twenty minutes for the next two groups to play through. As we continued to play we notice the starter following us, obviously he had been the entire time to be able to make comments about how many strokes we were taking. Surprisingly enough, the starter did approach us one last time. This time to apologize for his behavior. I apricated that this man recognized that he was wrong for the way he spoke to us, but that doesn’t make up for or excuse his behavior. I also recognize that the people in the pro shop that day were behind this as well. Obviously, this golf course only wants experienced golfers that want to play a quick round of golf. We were there to play, rest, and enjoy our time while on vacation. This is far from what actually occurred. I can honestly say I will never return here or recommend this golf course to anyone.

Solid, underrates Myrtle Beach layout

I'm a shameless fan of Pete Dye's to the point where I find even his "minor" courses compelling to the point of thinking they're underrated. That's the case with Prestwick, which is listed as a collaboration between Dye and his son, P.B. My late-June visit found the course in very good shape, with the greens just about perfect - smooth and fast enough to get your attention without being out-of-control. Good thing, too, because the layout of the course sneaks up on you repeatedly with the typical menu of Dye challenges: angled fairways and greens, deep bunkering, railroad ties and a handful of DO-NOT-GO-HERE spots that seem easy to avoid until you find yourself buffaloed.

Dye courses test a golfer's brain as much as anything, and that's why they're inscrutable to some, but irresistible to others. Put me in the latter group.

Challenging

The course was in great shape, fairways and greens were phenomenal! Tough layout for an amateur, but fun. The only negative I would say is really the same thing I have with most courses, the price is steap! The game still caters to money players and membership, with cathedral club houses and off-course amenities! Golfers like myself who love "the game", could never play this course regularly.

Great Experience

From the moment we arrived at the course we felt welcomed. The pro shop and starter were as friendly as it gets. The course is in fabulous condition. It has some very challenging holes and the layout is top notch. The greens were punched 2 weeks prior to our playing and although not perfect they rolled really well wit plenty of speed. Would definitely play again.

Great Value and GREAT Back 9

Played master's Sunday ahead of Tiger's big win. 1st two groups off the back and played in 1.5 hours.

the front nine was a bit slower as expected.

Back nine is what made the course for me, each hole is great. Front is a bit more pedestrian, but still worth the time.

Greens fees were modest compared to other courses we played. $88 on a Sunday morning works for me for a course this good.

Tough, Tough Greens

Had never played this course, so wanted to try it. It was a real test...especially the greens! I have played a lot of courses around the country, and this course had some of the fastest greens on which I've ever played! They were extremely tough--very fast, subtle undulations, and easily 3-putt territory. My first round was so bad, I played a second round to help boost my ego. Was able to shave 8 strokes off, but still not to my expectations score wise. The course is very nicely manicure, a nice variety of hole designs, in great shape, and the staff is extremely accommodating. I will try it again to see if I can "master" the challenge.

Challenging Course

Nice layout, course in good shape, starters, rangers, nice. Restaurant, service and food good. Tough, challenging greens, rolling hills, a tough test of golf. Jason, in the pro shop, very friendly. Was windy, the day our group played, making the course play tough.

Very challenging course, large greens

This is a very challenging course, your must pick correct tees or you will have a long tough day. Layout will take you through your bag with most all of your clubs, several par 4's over 400 yards from the white tees! Rough is penal in many areas around course, driving it in the fairways will serve you well. Pace of play was very good, less than 4 hours.

Favorite Course in Myrtle Beach

This is a great course with lots of challenging holes but opportunities to score. It has holes that are pretty open and others that are narrow. Staff is very friendly and seem to enjoy having you on the course. Recommend this course as a must for those traveling to Myrtle Beach for golf.

A true test

Prestwick is a Dye special. There is plenty of trouble around the greens. The course offers many different sets of tee's. Prestwick is a challenging course, but when it dry's out it can be one of the toughest courses in the area. A top 5 pick on the grand strand.

Nice course..not one of Pete Dyes best.

Played for the first time and was not overly impressed with the staff or the club house. The course was very nice and a playable layout when played from the proper tees. Rough was dried out after the frost from the week before. Greens were slow. I would like to return under better conditions but hope the staff are more accommodating and friendly considering it is a public facility.

Nice course painfully slow play

It was a cold day there had been a frost delay and our noon tee time was pushed back to 12:30..No big deal. But 5:15 to play was painful.....
Pro shop Staff was indifferent they certainly didn't make you feel at home or even welcome.

Layout was nice fairways were generous, rough was dormant so not really a factor, sand was way too fluffy, greens were true, but slow I guess due to the frost and not being cut that day.

Number 9 was a beast playing into a major crosswind (towards the water) ands stay out of the bunkers around that green or you could easily be faced with an impossible shot. Lots of railroad ties. I'm not a huge fan of linksy course but this one was enjoyable.
