In 1976, Cougar Point was the first course built at Kiawah Island. Designed by Gary Player, this demanding yet fair par-72 layout features holes playing directly along broad expanses of tidal marsh, offering panoramic views of the Kiawah River and acres of needlebrush and spartina grass.
Twenty years later, however, Player was given a reprieve and redesigned the course, evening things out and making it much more playable, to the acclaim of golfers and critics everywhere.
"They spent about $4 million to get Cougar to its present state, and it was money well spent," said TravelGolf.com writer Tim McDonald. "It's an under-rated resort course that you can score well on."
