Nice course unpleasant staff

The club shop check in was unpleasant. The men were gruff and not personable. In addition, when we got to the first tee, the starter allowed a pair of golfers to go out with one set of golf clubs. This slowed down play incredibly for our group. We were continually waiting for the other pair to complete their turn sharing clubs. It would have been ok if they were in the fairway, but they were splaying shoots ALL over the course. I’ve been to this course before and the people in the clubhouse check in are always rude. This was just a bad experience overall. The course conditions were fine, although if you hit the ball just off the fairway, the grass was very tall. Greens were tough to read, but in a good way. If you can ignore the poor staff attitudes and slower pace of play, the course is fine.

Westover Golf Club

The course was in ok shape. Tee boxes need grass seed and fertilizer, fairways were okay some bare spots, and the greens were in good shape. Rough was cut to a good length where you could at least find your ball. Overall I enjoy playing at Westover. Staff has always been friendly to me and the beer is cold after your round.

Nice course

Course was in good shape although the rough was pretty long. Wide open fairways and greens rolled true.

Walked

Hidden Fazio Gem to be Appreciated by the Golf Hardos like us.

Had a blast playing this underrated beaut. Twilight walking rate (after 3 PM) was $16 and the quirky layout is a masterpiece considering the plot of land its situated upon. People hating on this work of art clearly know absolutely nothing about golf history and are incapable of appreciating the excellence it takes to score here. George Fazio, local Norristown legend, the artist that blessed us with Pinehurst No 6, Squire, and Turtle Bay (to just name a few) put this little 6200 yard muni together for us common folk to enjoy. Sure the scenery is a little rough on the eyes, the pace of play may be bad on the weekends and of course the greens could be faster, but I’ll be damned; when you block that nonsense out, stand on the tee box and close your eyes to envision your shot, it’s then that you can truly appreciate the sheer brilliance of the layout. Golf nerds will smile the entire time (until your perfect roll jumps three times off line and you miss for birdie, but still). Honestly, if you want to complain about Westover, birdie 11 and 18 in the same round and post even par. Until then, shhhh youre just trying to escape the wife and kids you weekend warrior. If you’re like us though, you’ll understand. This golf course embodies the PhilaGolfia Lifestyle and is 100% PhilaGolfia Approved. One Love, Kenzo Bomb Squad Boys signing off.

Westover CC

second time playing Westover. I think you get what you pay for. It was 55 prime time on a Sunday - course itself has a couple of decent holes, and a few that are forgettable. Conditions were decent, much better this time that when I played it before.
Careful on #11 - odd tee shot and second shot.
Small putting area, and small range.
If you are looking for a decently priced round that you can get through relatively quick, this is a good place.
Bar looked nice, pro-shop had almost nothing in it.

Typical Public Golf

PACE OF PLAY: 4 hours, 5 minutes on a Saturday afternoon. Play can be choppy given the plethora of par 3's and reachable par 5's.

CONDITIONS: Tee boxes are absolutely awful, fairways and rough dry but fine, greens in pretty good shape despite being aerated recently.

STAFF FRIENDLINESS: Nothing wrong with the staff but they didn't go out of their way to be friendly.

VALUE: $35 for an afternoon tee time is a fair deal for this public track.

LAYOUT: Boring layout on the front nine with lots of up-and-back holes. Three reachable par 5's on the front. The back nine is quirky with three par 3 holes.

AMENTITIES: The clubhouse looks nice...for the 70's. The driving range is irons only and there's only a practice putting green. The clubhouse definitely needs some renovations.

OVERALL: 5.6/10

What happened

This used to be our go to place to play before noon on a weekend, best price and very good course conditions. The course conditions have deteriorated, the bunkers are collapsing and hard, not worth the $50 they are asking

Great value

So Westover is a municipal course but its in better shape than most public courses. The pace of play when its busy is TERRIBLE. Not only are tee times scheduled only 5 minutes apart but there are 3 holes on the back 9 that are a converted par 3, a par 4 with target golf tee shot, and then another par 3. This really backs things up in the summer. The other issue I have is it seems like every time I play the snack stand is closed. Also, the water fountains have been removed and its also been a while since I have seen water coolers on the course. I think most people have the expectation they at a minimum can get some water when they are playing but its a health issue when you cant stay hydrated. The dollar bill reader was working on the 1 vending machine yesterday also which was problematic. Not to mention the vending machine doesn't take credit cards and who carries cash in 2015. The prices are pretty good considering what type of shape the course is always in though.

All in all, its a good place to play, but you need to be ready for a 5 hour round and bring all the food and drink you can, because you are all alone out there.
