Extremely Disappointing
After a season of back and forth discussions of trying new courses away from our area (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre) we decided to try Mahoning Valley Country Club. I want to start by stating that the use of the word(s) "Country Club" is a definite misnomer. The access road to the "Club" gives you an immediate impression of the mistake we made playing this course. This road hasn't been paved or cared for in what looks like a decade or more and the parking lot...probably even longer. The next indication was the lack of vehicles in the lot or golf carts lined up for use. The pro shop attendant was more than happy to take our $48 for our round (at least $24 too high for what we were about to experience) and inform us that "conditions are good but it's 90 degrees since we had a little rain through the night". The use of the phrase "a little rain" was quite misleading since every single fairway on the front 9 from tee to green was saturated not to mention the rough along the fairways. It was obvious from the first tee on that this course has suffered tremendously with extensive bare patches (in some cases more patches than fairway grass). The cart paths..... well let's just say again that they certainly were not up to Country Club standards or even run-of-the-mill public course condition. The final complaint I have is that when we went to have a bite to eat and a drink when we finished our round at 1:00 pm, the clubhouse which had an opening time of Noon listed, was closed for the day. The positive part of our day was that the practice green, course greens and tee boxes were in good condition. The course itself is a fun layout and 7 of the back 9 fairways were in decent playing shape but due to the obvious lack of financial upkeep this course desperately needs, we will be avoiding this "dog track" in the future.
Does not hold rain well
It rained pretty consistently the week prior to playing, we had a beautiful day. We expected to have some spots of water build up and slow playing conditions but the course was just one large swamp. The balls didnt Bounce and in fact dug into the ground upon hitting. I can see the fairways were pretty burnt up but the plus side is the course layout was well done and the greens were good, fast and hard to read (a plus for me). Overall I will not be playing here again, one because of this experience and two it’s just at the limit of my search radius.
Mahoning Valley
Great course in great shape for a bargain price
A favorite vacation course
Thoroughly enjoyed this course. Greens well tended, fairways well kept; plenty of room on course. Water hazards and bunkers manageable, a few holes where the rough made shot placement difficult for one not blessed with 300 yard drives. A day after heavy rain dropped 4 inches on the course only a few spots still had standing water, fairways and tee boxes were dry. A new favorite vacation course
Great Golf Course for a Great Price....Restaurant???
I was able to get up to Lehighton to play Mahoning last week and what a great golf course even despite the front 9 greens being punched for aeration. The tees and fairways were in fantastic condition, while the back 9 greens (which were not punched) were immaculate. True rolling and fast, MVCC definitely featured the best greens of a public in NEPA in the last two years. The prices are a bargain compared to other courses with a worse product. Staff was very friendly and pace of play was right on 3 hrs and 45 minutes, which was fantastic.
My ONLY complaint was the fact that the restaurant was not open for lunch, where I was greeted somewhat rudely by a man in the restaurant telling me that it was closed and only open for dinner. As I searched for a menu I heard from a playing partner that it has NO true dinner menu despite having a great bar when open, which doesn't make alot of sense
Overall, this is one of the best, if not BEST public golf course I have played this year, and you NEED to play it if you have not. The only thing that hurts it is the fact that the restaurant does not appear open for lunch for guys like my group to settle up and have a few drinks.
