The East Course at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. has hosted more USGA Championships than any course in the country, from the Grand Slam in 1930 to the U.S. Open in 2013. Many famous players have been challenged by the sculpted greens and tight fairways of the East Course, including Jack Nicklaus who has been quoted saying it may be "the best test of golf in the world." The course originally opened in 1911 and was later joined by the West Course in 1914, which made it the first club in the country to boast two 18-hole championship courses. The intimidating greens are perhaps the toughest aspect of the East Course. The surfaces have slopes that range from subtle to dramatic and they are framed with a slew of treacherous bunkers. There is also tall, thick rough that can be quite punishing if you’re not careful. As golf champions such as Ben Hogan and Olin Dutra have discovered, this course is not for the faint of heart.
