Hueston Woods Golf Course
About
Hueston Woods Golf Course sprawls across over 260 acres of lush, rolling terrain. It plays to a beastly length of just over 7,000 yards from the back tees. Jack Kidwell, a designer who had a hand in many of Ohio's finest courses, created the course. It borders hundreds of acres of beech and maple forests that are accented with colorful wildflowers and provide a home to the area's wildlife. Kidwell utilized this rich and beautiful landscape to mold a scenic and challenging design. The layout features large, wildly undulating greens bordered by over 30 strategically placed bunkers. Four ponds also come into play on several holes and golfers will also have stands of mature trees to contend with. Hueston Woods' signature hole is the par-3 16th. This 175-yard hole requires a demanding carry over water.

Disappointing pace of play
Left after first nine taking 2 1/2 hours for a single. Had a twosome and then a single visibly ahead waiting on other groups ahead nobody willing to allow others to play through. The greens and tee boxes were in great shape, fairways were burnt out in spots. Playing only nine holes made the round a real disappointment. Decided to leave at turn with myself and the twosome waiting at the tee box a single in the fairway and another group on the green.
Course was rough
I have played this course many and I have never seen the fairways in such bad shape. The greens were good and so were the tee boxed, but the fairways looked diseased.
Back nature
Course was in excellent shape. The only issue was s group of 8 playing together. Overall good day!!!
Fire Groundkeeper
It had been 20 years since I last played this course and frankly I was greatly disappointed. I understand the need to cut down the Ash Trres but I do not understand cutting them down then never finishing the job properly which includes covering up the stumps after done. If I saw one stump with a hole next to it I saw 20 along the course because someone was too lazy to rake the stump grinds ovee the holes. In addition, grass was not cut around any of the bunkers even though the bunkers where raked. Tees had not been cut in at least several days. Several grrens had a week worth of goose dumpings on them, in fact one so many you could hardly putt. This is a one star course and it will be another several years before I try it again. I could have gone to a local county course and gotten at least average conditions. Cart guy needs to be gone as well. Never greeted us, never told us we could tee off, etc. as he was too busy sitting on his behind in the shade of the cart barn.
Great course average pace
Our round was 4.5 to 5 hours in length with a lot of waiting between shots. Everything else was great. The course was tough but fair.
Good Conditions
Course in great shape. Only problem we had was the sprinklers going off around the greens preventing us from putting on a couple holes.
Nice
For what we paid on golf now it was worth the drive from Richmond, but don't expect it to be a easy course. Very challenging
Fair course, good condition
We took a two hour rain delay as it was coming down hard. The course handled the water fairly well but some collected in the bunkers and cups. Course (grass) played nice though.
Fairways and greens were in great condition. Greens putted slower than we're used to.
Pace of play was awesome, after the rain we played around in 3:30.
This course have many doglegs mostly favoring a left to right ball flight... probably a slicers paradise now especially with many of the trees protecting the doglegs missing!?
Only complaint would be the cart paths, don't even try to drive on them, they're all jacked up.
Need some work
So this is my first time on the course since they cut down all the trees. It has made the course much easier from tee to green because it is hard to find trouble on some holes that you had to play target golf in the past. They did a lot of work clearing a ton of ash trees but they have not picked up a lot of the larger limbs that they fell which made things a bit unplayable. I took 6 drops in 18 holes due to large limbs down that I couldn't or didn't want to take the time to move. Also, this is a college town and get a lot of students who come out that are in it for the drinking, not the golf. Saw two different groups who were shirtless, leaving a trail of empty beer cans on fairways and in the rough. A lot of untouched divots on the green (my 3some came together and fixed atleast 3 per green per person just to try and help). It appears that the students walked through bunkers without taking shots (just because it was the most direct route to their ball), not raking or fixing anything. I don't want to be the grumpy old guy but a few rangers could have helped the situation tremendously. I will go back because the area is beautiful and with some work from the grounds crew will keep coming around. Overall, the tee boxes and fairways were in mid season form.
Long drive from Cincinnati
In a state park. Sadly, the emerald ash borer has killed a lot of the trees that were lining the fairways, said trees are in various stages of removal, creating a bit of a mess. Could use a good mowing too. Back 9 par 3's are really long with forced carries over water. Greens fast and undulating, hold good shots well. $5.50 at the turn gets you a good brat and a cold beer.
Absolutely stunned
Hueston Woods is one of the family favorites and that is why we chose to play it on Easter Sunday. Very few playing but we ran into some old family friends. A very nice surprise. The tee boxes, fairways, and greens were in great shape. The rough was a bit rougher than we anticipated. The club house staff were helpful and very friendly. The food at the turn was good, too.
The most unsettling aspect of the trip was the absolute devestation of the woods due to the Emerald Ash boar. We never realized how large a percent of the wooded area was comprised of ash trees. It was shocking to see the amount of damage caused by the insect. Tree after tree was being taken down or had already been removed....I have never seen anything like it.
Pleasantly surprised
Finding a tee time using Golf Now is usually a piece of cake. This Friday it happened to be tough to find a tee time around 9am, which is the time we need to play to be back in time to get our kids off the bus. We usually play for around 20-30$. Hueston Woods had good reviews but is an hour from each of our homes. We decided to go ahead and book it and give it a shot. Boy, I was pleasantly surprised. Course was in really good shape. The scenery is fantastic. The layout was challenging with trees, traps and water. Any time you play a tight course, one bad shot and the hole is over. This course had trouble to get into but it didn't ruin your round if you got into it. I'm sure Fall would be tough to find your ball with all the leaves, but other than that I would say any low-mid handicapper would enjoy this course as much as we did. Even twice a year golfer's would enjoy it and the surroundings. Loved this track!
Favorite Course
Hueston Woods Golf Course is an hour from home, but well worth the drive! The course is beautifully maintained in the gorgeous Hueston Woods park.
Feels like we're on vacation
We like to play Hueston Woods because it makes us feel like we're away from it all, in a quiet, beautiful setting. The course is always in good shape, it's not as crowded as some of the city courses we usually play, and while it tests our skills it's feels completely fair. Of the half-dozen or so courses we usually play, it's our favorite even though it's the farthest away.
Worth the drive
I had forgotten just how much I like this course. It is definitely a real man's course. The position of the doglegs forces you to hit long irons into the greens, which were fast and true. You have to be a real golfer, not a bomber to score well here.
Nice Course
Fairways are good, greens great, rough was essentially hardpan. Shots that would miss the fairway would run into the weeds. It was among the driest courses we have played this summer.
4th time playing golf...ever at this course
The first time I played, was with my nephew. It was the most fun we had considering we didn't know much about what we were doing. The second time, after we understood the rules of the game, was still a fun time yet the scores were not so forgiving. This last time, I played 9 holes with my future son-n-law and we still had a blast. Of course the course was busier than usuall it seemed, but we still had a great time aside from the humid weather. I like this course mostly because it is close to where I live. However, that being said I would recommend it to friends. Carts are always available. Greens seem fast though. I've got a lot to learn, but for a beginner such as me, I think would be alot more fun in groups.
Great Experiance..
The course was in great condition, being so late in the golf season. Took my two sons, and we had a fun round. Keep the ball in the fairway or you will be punching the ball back into the fairway. Will play this course again for sure. Well worth the hour drive..
A Real Treat!
My group makes an annual pilgrimage to this course
every year on Father's Day weekend. This year however, we were rained out. We had to quench our thirst for the challenge that this course always seems to deliver. So we took on the challenge a few weeks later and found the course as always in great condition. Friendly staff great rates, and not a single house to take away from nature.
