One of the Best Layouts I Have Ever Played
Course used to be the private Ashtabula CC designed by Bert Way. The front 9 crossed the street and played through flood plains of a creek and had so terrific holes. However, the back 9 was special and had some great elevation changes and wild greens and green locations.
Very sad that it closed.
Seriously, save your money!
What a terrible and deplorable course. The few good things were the pace of play and the course difficulty. If it was in playable shape this place would be nice. The pace of play was good because there was hardly anyone there. The bad, as you will see in the pics attached even though this is only one hole, the rest of the course is in identical shape. The greens are dying, weeds are overrunning the fairways, fringes and the bunkers. Course navigation was also very difficult as the paths and hole locations to the next made navigation a bit of a challenge and the asphalt paths were just shy of off road trails. Tees boxes, ha...no defined teeboxes, they pretty much chose randoms spots and plunked down a couple of rocks, distances marked on holes at tee boxes varied by as much as 30 yards. It was also very hard to distinguish the fairways from the rough, it was just kind of all blended together.
Overall a pretty rotten Sunday experience, the website gives false impressions of what the course looks like.
Worst course I have ever played!
I booked through Golf Now and, when reading the description of the course provided on the website ("The Harbor Golf Club is home to the county's best course and one of the top courses in Northeast Ohio."), was excited to make the 45 minute drive from Cleveland's east-side. What a disappointment!
Most of the greens were dying and the fairways were full of weeds. The holes were difficult to locate, going from green to the next tee-box, as the signage was all but non-existent.
I paid for 18, but quit after 10, because, frankly, I was mad that the website description was so misleading. I love golf and for me to quit playing mid-round, is something I've never, ever done!
False advertisement
The website for this course gives false advertisement. Speaks of new renovation in club house and restaurant, but that's not true.. He sells no food or alcohol. They had a couple boxes of crackers and 1 candy bar. Only a small cooler with water and a couple of pop flavors. We were told that the Martini restaurant would open at 4 but mainly just for drinks and appetizers at 4:45 it was not even open. And there were no cars. staff not too friendly. As for the course its poor for sure. Hard to tell what's fairway and rough. Couple holes that are 90 yards but straight up. If your ball doesn't get up you don't bother to get your ball, too steep. The course and paths are very rough and rugged. The fee thru golf now at $25.00 18 w/cart 25.00. Price should be 10.00. Will never play there again and worn friends to not waste their time. Golf now this is bad advertisement for you.
Surprised it is still operating
Six cars in the parking lot on a Saturday was the first clue that playing here was a mistake. Being a former CC the layout is good, but the condition are terrible. Maintenance is at a minimum level at best. The grass from the tees to the greens is not cut at a proper height. They need to get taller tee markers because it was hard to find the current ones in the tall grass. I don't see this course being open much longer.
Great layout and service
This is a great value course. It is a hike from Cleveland, but the layout is great. Old CC, so clubhouse and cart paths are beat up. The holes are fun and challenging and very scenic. Lots of elevation changes.
I played early in the morning, all the greens were already cut, the fairways and greens were not cut yet and were a little hairy, but the grounds crew was out there working on it, so they were probably done later in the day. Like I said before, the course is a great layout and conditions were average, but the cart paths are bumping and cracked. They did give me a full yardage book with layup distances which was really useful.
The Old Ashtabula Country Club
The Harbor, formerly the Ashtabula Country Club is a nice little course just outside the historic downtown Ashtabula harbor. A nice little retreat not far from the lakefront, the course plays fairly easy. However, it has appeared to lose some of its popularity since it has become public. It's a fair course, but if you are looking for lush, rolling fairways and plush manicured greens, you may want to see what else the area has to offer.
great course!
Very challenging,bring extra balls!!!!,elevation changes,tight fairways
harbor golf
HC fun and challenging course and was a good value.
This course is Challenging for the high handicapers.
Course has a large amount of heavy woods. Makes it tough on high handicap golfer, including myself to play a round without losing a number of balls. Other than that it has a nice layout and I injoy playing there. I just bring a few extra ball.
Hidden gem
I would have never found this course if not for golfnow.com but I am glad I did. Just a short jaunt up the north coast and I was pleasantly surprised to find a great value for the dollar. A pretty long course with elevation changes, not too much water or sand either. Had some great chances to pull out the driver and swing away. Greens were nice and not too fast or slow.
tight course great challenge
Greens are tough ,few very challanging holes, along with makeable pars for the hacker, didn't do so well the 1st time but makes we want to come back....
needs work
This course has potential but is horribly maintained.Nice layout with several large elevation changes.Greens were in good shape, but everything else was horrible. We played on a holiday and spent a lot of time looking for balls because they didn't have the fairways and rough cut. Will not play here again unless they start maintaining the course properly.
