Wilmington Municipal Golf Course gets high marks for its classic layout by Donald Ross, who a created a links-style golf course to test all levels of golfer. Golf Digest calls the third hole on of North Carolina's top 10 holes, but hold your breath for the 18th hole: a 430-yarder into the slight headwind that takes you right back into the clubhouse.

Considering that the Wilmington Municipal Golf Course is open to the public and sees a lot of golf, the golf course is well-maintained.

Another consideration about playing a public golf course such as the Wilmington Municipal Golf Course: It's dirt cheap, especially given the value of the round of golf.

Fun Muni Layout with Good Potential

After seeing the No Laying Up crew rave about Wilmington Muni, I was excited to check out the course. Unfortunately, we caught the course less than two weeks after they aerated for the summer, and the greens were very bumpy and sandy. But the course is still a typical Donald Ross layout: simple holes with well-protected and undulating greens.

I thought the conditions were very typical of a municipal course: patchy in areas, not the tightest lies. But I had a lot of fun here and thought the course was very score-able and accessible. It's certainly a no-frills kind of course, but filled with fun people and a good way to spend an afternoon. I will definitely be back - can't wait to try the course when the greens are rolling true and fast.

Fantastic Muni Course

Fantastic golf course and easily the best muni I’ve played. Challenging layout but very fair. Course definitely has a Donald Ross feel to it and requires a solid short game to score well. It gets a lot of play so the pace was awful for a Monday afternoon. Thoroughly enjoyed the course and look forward to playing it again.

Vacation Round was fantastic

So many good things to report! My girlfriend and I were on vacation and I knew I wanted to visit the course. We came here last year but I didn't have time to get on.

Fairways were perfect, and the greens were absolutely exceptional. Tee boxes were great, too. I'm from the northeast, where everything is rolling hills, tree-lined fairways and crap bunkers. Here- wide open on both sides of the fairways on most holes, the native sandy areas were awesome and it was mostly flat. Greens fast and pure, and had plenty of break. I was on fire on the back 9, my best 9 hole score ever. And met some great locals to finish off my round. The pace was a bit slow, I know many people here are walkers, but generally speaking, it was manageable.

You don't need to be super accurate here off the tee, but there are a ton of bunkers to punish you around the greens. Also, you can be quite creative with bump and runs and chips short of the green. The course is gettable and inviting. I hope to be back on our next vacation.

best value in golf

Read about this course renovating greens to original Donald Ross design so had to play it. Strange course as they only renovated the green complexes so from tees until about 50 yds short of green it is muni scrubby. But from 50 yds in it is immaculate and very challenging. Bunkers are deep with soft/fluffy sand which made them even more difficult for me.
Greens are unbelievable. Smooth with no ball marks, couldn't believe this was a muni.
A definite most play in Wilmington and an incredible value.

Magnificent Restoration - Donald Ross Jewel

The restoration of this Donald Ross course has put it back on my must-play list. I've played many Donald Ross courses, including Pinehurst #2 and The Muni is right up there with the best. The view of the wide green tees, greens and fairways are a sight to behold, especially if you played the course before the restoration. The green areas are elevated and surrounded by deep menacing traps, but the approaches are open with some with steep hills up to 10 feet high in front. The greens are smooth, reasonably fast and undulating. The traps are deep, plenty of sand and raked. The fairways are wide and in beautiful condition. The tees were flat and the grass was trimmed properly. The tees are long with many options for all levels of golfers. The pro shop is well stocked with merchandise and many good sale items. They have a snack area which is self-service as they sandwiches and hot dogs, snacks and beverages. It is a great walking course and there were many walkers on the course. We rode and played in less than 4 1/2 hours.

I highly recommend this course to all Donald Ross Lovers. I certainly felt like I was walking with Donald Ross as the course was beautifully restored to his original design.

Great visual flow.

Wide fairways make this course look easy, it's not. Great design with well protected greens. Greens are much larger this year but still roll true. The whole course just flows pleasantly to my eye. Starters are great at getting you on the course. Only drawback is length of play. Need to pick up pace of play.
