Situated in the North Carolina Sandhills, Pine Needles Resort & Golf Club may not have mountains vistas or sprawling lakes but it does have a beautiful design that blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings. Towering pine trees arch over the fairways, providing a cathedral-like feel. Renowned designer Donald Ross designed the course. His love for designing in the Sandhills is well known. It was a favored spot for him since it was reminiscent of his Scottish homeland where he learned the art of design under Old Tom Morris. Ross even designed another golf course right across the street, Mid Pines. At Pine Needles, Ross allowed the natural contours of the land determine the routing of the holes and placement of the bunkers. The classic design of this challenging course has earned Pine Needles a ranking in the top five golf courses in North Carolina.
