Longleaf Golf & Country Club in Southern Pines, N.C. occupies what was formerly one of the Village of Pinehurst's horse training estates. Touted by Golf Digest as the "most playable course in the Sandhills," Longleaf is a popular choice for players of all skill levels. Some of America's top thoroughbreds came out of the former training facility and course architect Dan Maples wanted to incorporate the site's history into the design. He kept many of the original features including the white fences, rail posts, and hedgerows, and he even used part of the old training track. The fairly flat, wide-open front nine provides a gentle start. It's a good warm-up for tackling the more challenging back nine where you'll find tighter holes and more elevation changes. Trees, doglegs, and water hazards also come into play more on Longleaf's back nine.
