Elevation on a Ross

Southern Pines post Kyle Frantz re-do is amazing! Elevation changes are unreal. Greens have way more undulation than the Mid Pines/Pine Needles combo. Way more severe. Conditions are great. Cannot wait for the new clubhouse. This will continue to be one of the best in the country with continued improvement.

Donald Ross at his finest

Play this amazing course! Don’t be soured by the crappy parking lot or clubhouse! It was an Elks course for years, but the new management (Pine Needles, Mid Pines) have brought the 1906 Ross design back to life! In fact, Ross had begun Pinehurst No 2 when he had a chance to work magic on this piece of rolling land at the edge of Southern Pines, NC. He brought these magnificent 18 holes to life then went back and finished 2! SPGC is simply amazing, demanding every shot in a golfers repertoire!

A hidden gem no more

For years, Southern Pines had a reputation as being a sleepy, under-the-radar gem overshadowed both by the Pinehurst Resort courses and Pine Needles and Mid Pines as well. Now that it is under the same ownership as PN and MP, and now that Kyle Franz's renovation work has amped up both the visuals and the greens, Southern Pines will be very difficult to overlook going forward. Because Franz introduced his own flair to the course via some wild green contours, the course is significantly tougher than it used to be, and less a pure Ross product than an old-meets-new hybrid. That said, it is still a wonderful place to play, with a grander scale than ever thanks to some truly impressive tree-clearing that opens up vistas across a quite hilly site. Southern Pines has found its voice again, and golfers are taking notice.

Walked

Awesome Donald Ross Track

First time playing Southern Pines and it did not disappoint. The course was aerified 2 weeks prior so the turf was still healing a bit, but the greens rolled just fine. The layout was awesome. Typical Donald Ross course with very challenging greens and Tee shots that require accuracy. I didn't find too many "Bail out" areas around the greens which made getting up and down very difficult. We walked with push carts provided by Southern Pines and it was worth it considering it was cart path only when we played. Undulating terrain made the walk tough, but if I played it again, I would still walk. Would HIGHLY recommend playing Southern Pines next time you're in the Pinehurst area. I know I will be back!

Terrible waste of money

Considering all of the beautiful courses that we could have played this one was a disappointment. A beautiful Donald Ross couse in at best adequate condition. This couse would have been fine if it was 1/4 the cost. At $195 a round, this does not even compare to other courses in the area.

Wow, couldn't disagree with you more. Having played nearly every course in the Pinehurst area I would put this in my top 3 with #2 and Tobacco Road. The Kyle Franz redesign is an absolute masterpiece. Only drawback to the property is the clubhouse which is dated on the exterior, but pretty much a non factor for me with such a beautiful course.

Not worth the money

We played this course while in the area to watch the Womens US Open. Southern Pines was recently purchased by the same people that own Pine Needles; both are Donald Ross courses. The playing surface from tees to greens was in good shape and it’s an interesting design: rolling hills, challenging greens and bunkers, etc. While it makes sense for new owners to pour refurb $ into playing surface, once you got off the “track,” the course, paths and buildings are a mess. In addition, while we paid $195 per round, they did NOT provide practice balls free or water on the course. There was a cooler with bottled water on the 6th, which you could take and pay for at the concession stand on #10. Really, no water or range balls at $195?! Locals will tell you, new ownership is milking this cash cow for all its worth, with hopes of selling it off; an unfortunate, but common story these days as it pertains to club management. The staff on course were very nice. Folks at pro shopped seemed non-plussed when I shared my reaction to being charged for range balls and 90 degree temps with no free water on course. We will not play there again. Suggest you pass on this club, too

First time on this historic course

Beautiful historic layout. There were a lot of scruffy areas but tees and greens were fine, though greens were a little slow. Pin placements were very difficult. I would like to play it again when conditions improve. I thought the price was high for the condition the course was in. The potential is unlimited!

I wouldn’t recommend it at its current price. It’s charging close to mid pines and pine needles, and although the course compares favourably, the club amenities are sorely lacking. Until the entire experience is significantly improved, they shouldn’t be charging big boy prices.

Top three favorite courses

I've played many of the courses in the area (PH No2, Mid Pines, Pine Needles, etc) and this is my favorite. The restoration is amazing. It feels like No2 but without the insane requirements to play.

The staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly and the replay rate is great. I would highly, highly recommend.

Windmill greens

Outstanding layout and conditions. Greens are a bit too much for me. Enormous DR false fronts with massive undulations. They are in great shape and thankfully a bit slow or it could have gotten really ugly.

Still getting it ready but great layout and challenge

I had not played it before the renovations, but really liked the course now. They're still working on it, some areas betqeen holes were muddy but course itself was pristine.

And wow, challenging course that was really fun to play. Good elevation changes on some holes, false fronts as expected.
