This was a great track in the sandals area. Unfortunately, it has closed for good.
Challenging but well worth the money
First, let me say that my wife and I consider this course one of our favorites in the Sandhills area. We make certain to play it whenever we visit.
The course offers a challenging venue among the rolling hills and pine forests that are characteristic of this region. Very few holes can be seen from one another, as the course rambles through the woods. This is not a course that favors walking, as a number of holes are significant distances from each other; plan on utilizing a cart.
The course requires accurate driving, and well struck iron shots. A number of holes are characterized by fairways that require forced carries over natural areas that will swallow an errant shot. Most greens are undulating, which will either reward or punish you depending on the accuracy of the approach shot. We have found the staff to be quite friendly and helpful. Two caveats that do not impact the course: the "clubhouse" is essentially, a large trailer, and the driving range is an "irons only" layout. On the plus side, if Golf Now is utilized to book your game, expect significant savings!
All of that being said, if you desire a superior and challenging golf venue, The Carolina, is a must!
Great layout, needs some TLC
This corse has a great layout that challenges you to make some difficult shots. However, it looks like a sandlot. The physical condition of the course is horrible. I took my father-in-law here when he came to visit from Dallas, and I was embarrassed at the poor state of the course.
Hard on the eyes
My wife and I played the Carolina on Monday July 8th. We have been playing here for the last three summers but this summer we were shocked at the condition of the course!! I can"t believe the course has gone downhill so quickly...( I hope Mr. Palmer doesn't find out about it). Between the shaggy fairways, the rough which hasn't been cut in weeks and the ultra slow greens, not to mention knee high weeds growing in the once prominent bunkers, what a huge disappointment. I understand the wet weather the last couple of days, but I don't think its been mowed in over a month. As I spoke with the golf manager after our round, I was surprised that they loaned out all their equipment to their sister course and were closed for two weeks in June (prime weather conditions for grooming a golf course, rain or not). There is a sadness writing this review, because we used to loved the course !!! But now, I don't think we will ever go back. We received a good rate through golf now for our round, but as I research the next day at the Carolina, they still want full price. Get your mowers returned to you and start acting like a golf course or pack it in altogether
This is a excellent course that requires precision off the tees. Course layout is excellent with a few blind shots.
Staff was extremely friendly and gave great information about the course. Course was well maintained with superb greens. Putts were rolling very true with good pace.
Wonderful Track
The only reason it is a 4 star instead of a 5 is due to some bad places on some of the greens. Really challenging track with its natural beauty in tact. Fun to play and a waste of 4 hours.
This course is outstanding!
We received a great rate on GolfNow for this course. Tee boxes, fairways and greens were very well kept. Some of the bunkers did have weeds growing up in them, but I try not to play in the bunkers! The clubhouse is just a small trailer, but we came for the golf which we loved! You get free green fees for your birthday (either one week before or one week after the date) if you register on line. We will definitely play this course again. Nice little gem!
Needs some basic maintenance
Rough not recently mown. Bunkers in generally poor condition - some have grass growing in them - very inconsistent sand and sand density.
Greens were slow but in good condition.
One of the best layoust in the area but...
I've played this course at least 30 times a few years back. It has an awesome layout with tons of great holes it's a Palmer gem. But the condition was poor from grass growing in almost every bunker to long stem weeds (a foot tall) in patches through the fairway and even on the collar of a green. . It's a shame that it appears all over the course that money is an issue.
Thanks
Chris
I can understand that why people call him the king
This is one of my favorite. I can tell this is Palmar course. I always like to play this.
Nice layout and great value
The Carolina is a very nice layout with a lot of elevation changes and holes that are very different from one another. Many holes give you options from the tee box. The only downside about the course is the condition of the fairways. This should be prime season for grass growing, yet the fairways were not in good shape.
Fun course!
Course was challenging, but needs a little TLC!
Greens and tees were in great shape, but the fairways needed some attention!
Greens Excellent
The greens were really nice, they held shots, rolled fast and true, and were overally very nice. The rest of the course was decent but kinda "rough around the edges". Some fairways appeared to be not mowed in several days. Sprouts of grass were 3-4 inhes high in areas (3rd fairway). But the coolers were full of ice cold water and the staff was very friendly. I will be back.
Nice Course off the Beaten Path
I try to play The Carolina every time I visit Pinehurst. It's a very nice, challenging layout with tees positioned to provide a challenge for any player level. The course is located away from most of the area development, so there are few houses or other distractions from the beautiful layout. The tees and greens were in great shape, but unfortunately, the fairways needed a little work to eliminate invasive grasses. Overall a great deal.
One of my favorite courses to play!
I have played this course for the past 6 or so years and consider it one of my favorites in the Pinehurst area. Challenging but enjoyable every time I play.
Plenty of areas you can get into trouble if you are not careful.
Greens fairly easy... Back nine a little tight... Well worth the money and hour drive...
Was a very challenging course but some holes played very easy.. The back nine was tight... If you have time drive up and look at hole because a lot of them have hidden trouble.. I drove into a few so lay up... Not a long course.. Drove down from Chapel Hill and it was a short enough drive that course cost made it well worth to drive down to the Sandhills for golf... The end...
This course is a diamond in the rough.
Layout is what you see the pros play every weekend on television. Very scenic and challenging. Great bargain for the money
The course has a Good layout. Enjoyed playing.
I would like to play course once it's in good shape.
The course was in excellent condition for this time of year
The front nine has several blind shots, the back nine the 150 yard markers are more visible from the tees. Greens rolled very well. It is a course you will enjoy. I played the course at a 56% discount. At that price I will definitely be back.
Need Ranger
We had a nice first nine, moved at a good pace. Then came the back nine, sloooooooow. Four hours just to finish the back, it was a warm sunny day and we had nothing better to do so we finished 18. But really someone should have moved things along.
