Pinehurst's sporty surprise

It is odd that the original course at Pinehurst tends to get overshadowed, but there you have it: the first course built is in some respects the resort's hidden gem. Overlooked no doubt because it barely cracks 6,000 yards and doesn't have a ton of picture-postcard holes, it is nevertheless a lot of fun, perfectly suited to a second round of the day or an early-morning last look before departing. The course's par threes - particularly the fall-away 7th and the long 12th - are superb, and add some teeth to the course along with the small, subtly elevated greens. The out-and-back routing is charming, too. Do not ignore this course when planning a trip.

Most magical experience ever!

Pinehurst has to be one of the most if not the most magical golf experiences in the US, if not the world. I feel privileged and blessed to have played in the original and first course ever built at Pinehurst, and boy it did not disappoint. From the moment you drop off your golf bag to the moment you finish the round, it feels like you're in a beautiful dream you never want to wake up from. To top it all off, I played one of my best rounds ever, which made the experience even more delightful. Everything about the course was absolutely perfect, as if created by God, and pictures or video don't do it justice, it is a place you have to be there in person to experience its true beauty. The OG Pinehurst #1 is perfect for guys like me who are not very long hitters. Play it from the tips! Every aspect of the course is perfect and pristine. The greens are absolutely perfect. I've never been on greens where putts have rolled so true.

Locals say No 1 is fun

No 1 is only 6,100 yards but it's not really short for a typical player from white tees. The front is not very interesting but ends with a fun downhill par 3 over water and overall playable track. The back nine is more interesting with elevation changes and doglegs. Overall a fun course for a warm up. Probably easier than most Pinehurst courses. Between 3 and 5, five is more interesting. 1, 3 and 5 were offered at half the price of the other courses.

Beautiful

I know this is considered one of the lesser Pinehurst Resort courses, but it was excellent. Course was immaculate, fun and challenging. It’s a Ross course so you know the greens will be tricky and they were. Fair amount of OB so you need to be accurate, which can be tough because it’s short and tight in spots. If you can keep it play and have have a decent short game, a low score can be had. I would gladly play it again and thought the price was very fair.

THE CRADLE OF GOLF NEVER DISAPPOINTS

What a pleasant surprise. My wife and I stopped by Pinehurst on way back down from Northeast. A chance to play the original, first course at 1/2 price was beyond all expectations. #1 is gorgeous from the get-go; no it's not #2 or #4, but it is a fun course from the tips. Don't be thinking your gonna just rip your driver on every hole, you have to think your way around #1. My wife enjoyed the course immensely,..happy wife....happy life. We played #5 the day before for half price at 4:30 pm. Wish we had a couple more days because the Cradle Par 3 course looked like a blast...barefoot golf with music blasting and cocktail mini-RV serving up some Transfusions. Keep doing what you are doing Pinehurst...you are winning!

A Warmup Course

This is not a real "Ross" course. Some holes have the right flavor, but many show that they were designed before Mr. Ross arrived and before he acquired his towering skills as a designed. #9 gets lost because the course was changed to accommodate the US Open. There are some scenic holes but, in comparison to the other courses at Pinehurst, this is plebian.

The Original!!

I've played #1 a few times now and it doesn't disappoint. As others have said it is a fair course. It is not long at 6100 yards but you can't just rip driver every hole. There are a few blind shots from tees and #12 is a true test of a par 3. The course conditions have always been outstanding. It is Pinehurst so you get the hospitality, the practice facility, the clubhouse with all the history and the Deuce Grill is delicious food. I think it is worth your time to play the original at Pinehurst if you are in the area.

Great Experience

Played #1 with my 10 year old son. With the junior rate our total fee with cart was $165.00. Course was in perfect condition. The course is not tricked up and every shot is fair. The greens are challenging but two putts are the norm. Playing from the white tees my little guy had a blast. Everyone treated my son as a valued guest and made him feel that he was a member. (me too!) To date, it was the most fun and best experience we have had on a golf course together. We were both impressed by the staff, the clubhouse, the practice facility, and the course itself. The entire day gave us a father/son experience that we will always cherish.

Historic and Fun

Pinehurst #1 was first opened in 1898. Yep, it's almost 120 years old - just a few years younger than Chicago Golf Club, argued to be the oldest 18-hole course in the United States.

#1 is generally straightforward and just 6,100 yeards from the tips, but it's a fun course to play. Lots of room off the tee, but there are several holes where driver doesn't make sense. Greens aren't tricked up, but they can be tricky to read. Par 3's are pretty solid, especially #12.

#1 is a nice way to experience Pinehurst without the investment and challenge of #2. Same clubhouse, same practice facility, same friendly people. Definitely a good choice for a first round on property or as a second, casual round on a 36-hole day.

Enjoyed the course and would play again

I was very happy and impressed with the course conditions. Great course to play.
I play #5 last year and was not impressed at all, but #1 is 10 times better.
Play hole 18 with the Pinehurst facility in the background makes awesome photos.

short but nice

Very nice classic course. Holes are varied, play was never boring. The price is high, but you get more than just a round of golf. The practice facility and clubhouse are first class and the amount of history is awesome. If you are a short hitter this is a good way to experience Pinehurst.
