Fun
First time I had played here in about 15 years. Course was well-maintained and pace of play was good (also helped that we went off early). Some holes are open and some can get pretty tight. Really good hole variety from the tips with a great mix of long and short holes. Did not expect to be paired up on a wednesday morning, but worked out well. The guy was an ace, had great conversation and was a solid player too. Will definitely play again when in the mountains. Price seemed high, but I guess most decent courses are these days no matter when you play them.
Solid Course
Played Mountain Glen for the first time today. It’s a very solid public course, no real wow factor or outstanding holes. But solid golf in an area with few public options. Having played both this weekend, I would still put Boone Golf Club a notch above Mountain Glen. However, the conditions were good. Being Sunday and the grounds crew not having worked since Friday I thought the fairways and collars and tees were a little long. But I would assume that would be cut Monday. The tees had good coverage. The par 3 tees all looked like they had recently been redone with a different type of grass than the rest of the course. Fairways were in good shape. Greens looked really good. Seemed a little soft and slow. But overall very nice and rolled smooth. The staff was very friendly, I had a flat tire on the way to the course, and was 10 minutes late to my tee time. But they worked to get me out on the course. The fairways are relatively tight. The front 9 plays downhill from the clubhouse and then back up towards the clubhouse. The holes are side by side and there is a very small creek that divides them. The back is built back up into a cove and has some more unique doglegs, blind shots, and challenging holes.
1 is a medium length downhill par 4. Creek on the right the entire front 9 almost
2 is a really long par 5. Like 540 plus yards. The creek crosses the fairway in front of the green about 100 yards out.
3 is a medium length par 4. Still creek on right. Pretty ho-hum
4 is a longer par 3. Slightly uphill around 185 yards or so.
5 is a shorter par 4 turning back up the hill back to
The clubhouse creek still on the right and fairway sloping that way.
6 is a very drivable par 4. 265 or so. I drive it into the front bunkers just short of the green.
7 is a hard dogleg left par 4. About a 200 yard shot of the tee and then the hole turns left steeply up the hill.
8 is a medium length downhill par 3.
9 is a par 5, about a 90 degree angle dogleg right uphill. First shot goes out straight. Creek on the right. Then you hit over the creek up the hill. And then approach to the green.
10 is a shorter par 5. But with an early dogleg and then moving uphill to the green. You almost need to hit less than driver off the tee.
11 is one of the harder holes on the course. Long uphill par 4. It moves around to the left and the green is tucked far up to the left. Pin was in the back of a big green. Just a tough hole.
12 is a medium length downhill par 3. Steep downhill tee shot.
13 is another hard hole. Almost a U or bomerang shaped par 4. Small pond in the middle of the U that you have to negotiate.
14 is a long straight narrow par 5. The approach shot I’d really tight. And anything missing right bounces way down the hill and makes for an impossible recovery with several large trees in the way.
15 is a longer par 3 over a large pond.
16 is a relatively short straight away par 4. One of the easiest holes on the back for sure
17 is another hard hole. The fairway runs at an odd angle from the tee box off to the right. The fairway is also one of the tightest on the course. Just a really hard fairway to hit. And a relatively long hole as well to be so tight.
18 is a shorter dogleg right par 4. Moving up hill across the creek to the green right in front of the clubhouse.
All in all a nice little course. I thought the weekend rate of $78 was a bit much for the layout and condition. More of a $50 or $60 course in my opinion. But. In an area with so few public golf options they can about charge what they want to. Regardless, it’s definitely worth a play if you are in the area.
Great course
Course was in great shape considering the recent dry spell. There have been a lot of recent improvements all around the course and I look forward for more to come. Truly a treat to play.
Decent Conditions Except Tee Boxes
Pace of play was slow. For some reason, there were groups of 5 players on the course. Only saw a ranger once, and he was picking balls out of a water hazard. The greens were good but the tee boxes were a mess! It was impossible to find a flat, grassy area to teeup your ball, because they were so chewed up.
Pace of play miserable
Third year playing Mountain Glen, last two as members
Pace of play became tedious starting last year. This year it is miserable. Only way to keep moving is to skip ahead of the road block
No rangers on site and many older players take a quarter of an our to complete a whole. With older membership, pro should allow more time between rounds. Typical round we skip three holes to finish under four hours.
Staff is friendly and course is great otherwise and kitchen is outstanding. Hope they get the pace pace under control
Fun layout, but not dramatic
Overall, it was a nice course. Conditions were very good, greens were in good condition and fair, course was wet but played well.
The layout was a fun layout, if it was on flat land. I was disappointed that a course in the mountains failed to take advantage of the mountains. There were only minor elevation changes. The routing was well designed forcing the golfer to shape the ball off the tee both left and right.
a pleasant experience
Mountain Glen is a good, public, mountain golf course. The bent grass greens were well maintained and rolled true. As is the case in all too many of this type course the clientele is unwilling to bend over and fix their pitch marks- not the management's fault. The lay-out is attractive, and a meandering stream provides a hazard on a number of holes. There is only moderate elevation change, especially for a mountain course.
Best bang for the buck
Great little course always in great shape look forward to playing it every year
Clubhouse Staff really rude to all players, but nice course!
I love this course but the man that checks you in and you make payment is probably one of the rudest people I have ever met. He acts so annoyed when anyone has the audacity to actually play the course. He is that way to every single person that comes in, I had to wait for about 30 minutes to tee off so I got to observe the interaction in the clubhouse. Not one customer was spared a rude comment when paying but then as they walked off he mumbled some trite remark about them under his breath! At one point, I was like "Am I on camera or something? This can't be for real?" What's crazy is I can understand him having one bad day, but I have played the course three times and he is the same way every time!
Anyway, other than the obvious need for a new clubhouse cashier the course is actually great! Challenging, but approachable and always a blast! I live in Johnson City and Mountain Glen is worth the drive!
fun course to play
Greens were perfect. Actually all course conditions were perfect.
Best Course and Value around!
This is by far my favorite course around the Asheville area! Always in great condition! Staff is always great! Pace of play is usually very quick! Highly recommend this course to anyone!
This is a great mountain course!
Tremendous amount of rain this summer in the mountains! The course was soaked, so no roll, but we had a great time! Great mountain views, and elevation changes. I will definitely play this course again!
Fun in the mountains.
Fun course to play in the high country. Always in great shape. Lots of short birdie holes with a few tight challenging holes. Nice greens. One of my favorites for many years. I've played this course on vacation for the last dozen years
