Castle Bay Country Club
About
Although it is tucked away just north of Hampstead, Castle Bay Country Club will make you feel as though you've been transported to the British Isles. The golf course offers an authentic Scottish-links design that incorporates the natural wetlands of its coastal Carolina location, giving it a truly unique character. The landscape of rolling dunes is covered with native grasses but completely devoid of trees. Tall sand bunkers are strategically placed throughout and there are also expansive waste areas, both characteristics that are true to its links nature. Water hazards come into play on several holes as well. Accurate shot placement is the key to doing well on this course and just like any seaside links layout, the coastal breezes play a prominent role. Much of the difficulty of the golf course comes from negotiating with the prevailing winds.

Early in the season but greens need some work, patches of other grasses abundant. Golf carts need some work, club and ball washer worn out, base was rusting and a few bald tires
Transition conditions
The greens are infested with poa annua and a chemical application to control has turned the grass brown, except for the poa which is still green.
Fairways are very thin as Spring has not brought recovery yet, although any number of incongruent grasses are thriving.
Wednesday is a league day and tee times were not adequately arranged to ensure an enjoyable pace of play for public golfers.
Nice round
Enjoyable. Course was in good condition and greens rolled well. There were a few blisters here and there but not a bother. Staff was super friendly. Good driving range and practice green. The potentially drivable 18th hole was a bonus. Thanks for a pleasant round of golf.
Extremely Windy
I play this course a few times a year and the staff is always friendly. It's always windy here, but today it was very windy which made club selection difficult and the course play harder than usual. I was a little disappointed as some of the tee boxes were not in very good shape.
The fairways were pretty thin or clumpy. And some of the greens had weeds growing in them, which was surprising because the greens have always been good and usually fast.
Also the carts were getting pretty rough. One did not have the GPS screen. The club cleaners did not have any brushes left in them and the seats were split. The GPS on my cart was not giving correct distances, as we checked with different range finders.
So I was a little disappointed, but perhaps they will be getting new carts and the course conditions will improve as we get into the spring weather.
One suggestion, although it's nice to have GPS to show layouts of the holes, it's useless if they are not calibrated. And most people carry range finders so I think most golfers would rather save a few $$ , than pay for GPS.
I do look forward to playing here again next month, and hopefully it will not be as windy as it was yesterday.
Slow Pace
Too slow of a round for a 7:48 am tee time. Almost a half hour off pace due to two foursomes playing poorly and slowly. Ranger was unhelpful despite repeated electronic messages on the cart’s monitor noting slow pace and warnings to pick it up.
Greens are in terrific shape: firm, good speed, and rolling true. Course had drained well after heavy rainfall two days prior.
Great
The course is Great condition and it was fun to play. The GPS screens in the carts were awesome and the carts were fast and quite. I paid for the round online and they had no record of it in the pro shop. As I write this on Monday 3/18/24 I have still not received receipt. That would have greatly helped when the people in the pro shop could not find that I paid. As it turned out, the pro shop guy took my work for it and hand wrote me a note to show the starter. The GolfNow app was a Hugh disappointment.
Fun layout
Greens were trickier than they looked. But overall very nice. Some wet spots on the fairways but I have found that to be true with all the courses around here. Even though we are about 1/3 low in rain this year. I would play it again.
1st time impressions
Course was wet from the previous day weather. Not very many on the course and i was told to play away as i was just a single. The starter recommended moving up a tee since the grounds were extremely wet and cart path only. Great advice…thanks. I caught a ladies foursome on the 3rd hole. They played as if they were the only ones out that morning. Never offered to let me play through. They did pick up the pace of play once dark clouds rolled up on 13th. Looking forward to a replay when the fairways are thicker and not wet and slow.
Very windy day
Course was good for first of March greens little bumpy in places wind was steady at like 20 mh with strong gust will go again when weather is better. Is a fun little course
Beautiful Course that has its challenges
I enjoy playing Castle Bay more than most of the local courses. Overall in Spring and Summer it just gorgeous. The only thing I’d like to see update is the greens. They are great but it seems like they don’t dry even and can be a bit unpredictable. Take that with a grain of salt. I mean if that’s my only negative and it’s minor this course is worth playing on the regular. Love it overall. Gives you the Scottish course feel here and there. Highly recommend.
Good overall value
Very good value for the money. Loved the links layout. Course in good overall shape. Greens had some winter grass growing which made for some bumpy putts. But overall condition was good. Staff was top notch.
Great bar and grille
Tee boxes were awful, lots of goose droppings. Time to put some money into this course. Nice layout!
Pace of play was awful. Called clubhouse twice. 5 hour round. There response was there is nothing they can do.
