Keeps getting better!
The conditions of this course are fantastic; especially for the increased play all courses have gotten this year. The switch to Bermuda is paying dividends. Staff are friendly without pretension. Very enjoyable atmosphere to get away without leaving town. Special course!
A great course
I’ve played Chapel Hill. Country Club a fair amount over the years and the CHCC staff, along with its members, have invested a ton of time and money into marking CHCC’s course one of the best in the Triangle. The Championship Bermuda greens roll true throughout the year and are a real test when firm and rolled in warmer months. A lot of effort has been invested In drainage and the course is in phenomenal shape, even in the wet winter months. Overall the course protects itself extremely well and even the “easier” holes demand precision off of the tee. The long dog-leg left 4th hole is one of the harder holes to score on in the Triangle. Two of the four par 5s are very difficult to reach in two, despite their shorter length and reward smart play. The par 3s offer a little bit of variety from short irons to longer irons on the approach shots, with the 15th being the most challenging. My favorite holes on the course greet you when make the turn. The tight front 9 opens up to expansive water views on 10 and 11, with the long par 5 11th contrasting with a short par 4 12th (which offers up a good chance for a birdie, and is a stark contrast with the long par 4 14th). The back 9 concludes with the uphill par-5 18th hole and is a fantastic way to finish a round. While looking at the scorecard, CHCC seems like it would be far simpler than it is, but the layout provides an opportunity to enjoy a smart and beautiful layout.
Could it be any slower?
Not sure what the problem was. I've played here before and love the layout. Our round took 5 hours, 10 minutes. Ranger came out several times but was clueless. Bunkers with little sand, lots of weeds growing in fairway and rough. Probably the worst condition I've ever seen this course in.
Orange County's only private club
Chapel Hill Country Club, founded in 1922 a couple of miles away as a nine-hole course, is an upscale private club with a course appropriate to that status. Staff and amenities are top notch as is maintenance of the course. Holes 10, 11, 12, and 18 offer lots of water - comparable to a beach resort course. Tough but fair course from the back tees. Lots of road crossings and nearby traffic. Not quite as good a design as Fazio's Finley Golf Course across NC 54, Chapel Hill CC is more than worth playing whenever you are invited. Subject to drainage problems after heavy rains.
