Winter warm up
Mid week play was relaxing , no stress and no one pushing, it is N.C. winter with dormant fairways and greens. Greens undulating and quick. Tee boxes are rough shape. Women also get a huge break on most holes . Staff friendly and helpful. Peaceful country golf. A good warm up for upcoming spring.
A Fun Place to Tune Up Your Game
On Thursday morning I teed off in the summer heat looking forward to a good practice round. First time on the course and I was greeted promptly and given an overview of the course layout. There are limited markings on the course other than at each tee but the cart paths make it a fairly intuitive course to traverse.
What the course lacks in sand, water, and length, it makes up for in small, bordering on tiny, elevated, and challenging greens. The greens and fairways were lush and well maintained. It appears they are putting in a lot of effort to catch up on some deferred maintenance.
Keep in mind that this course is off the beaten path and the little clubhouse offers few amenities so prepare accordingly.
I'll certainly visit Dogwood Valley again and again now that we have been introduced.
Fun
Fairways are just ok, although you will get a lot of roll. Local knowledge is helpful as all but a couple tee shots on the par 4's and 4's are blind. This only adds to the challenge. The greens were in great shape and rolled true. Overall I found the course a lot of fun to play. It's only 9 holes so on my second time around I had a little better idea of where I should aim my tee shot. Greens also have some contours and most of them are raised so it's important to hit the green and hopefully hold. The sand traps have all been filled in (no sand anymore).
The owner / staff was very friendly. There are not any amenities in the clubhouse. Just some snacks and soft drinks. Also, the course is way out in the country. There were not many playing on the day I was there and I think that's probably par for the course. If you want somewhere to have a little fun and a course that's not crowded, this is the place. I will definitely play again.
Good for practice
For the most part fairways are generously wide, and difficulty is moderate. This is a good course to walk for the exercise and to work on your ball striking and control. Since there are no longer any sand bunkers (you can see where they used to be and they were formidable) you won’t get any practice hitting out of sand. Fairways are a bit thin on grass coverage but not bad. The greens while in great shape as far as the health of the grass, they are exceedingly slow. Expect a Stimp of about 7. Overall a good value and a great way to just practice your game.
Great practice course if you're in the area
As other reviews state, no sand, no water but mounding around greens and light undulations prevent it being too boring. Maintained well enough. What makes it a great choice is the price. While other places are approaching $70 it's great to still be able to find a place that's pretty decent maintenance for less then $30.
Greens are as good as any other place. It's just the tee boxes, fairways and carts they reduce cost on. My cart still had the previous players card and a couple cigaretette buttons in it so it clearly wasn't washed out. That's OK though, for the price I paid.
Rough and fairway height are just right. Two shots were a little out of whack..approach on 3, tee shot on 8.
Only 9 holes but once again, less then $30 to practice at a decent place is worth it.
Gem of a course
Really a gem. Not a lot of people out early in the morning. Great players, no one rushing anyone. Greens are fantastic. The course is wide open and for any mistakes that are made.
Nice course
Fun course. It is short and has no water or sand, but makes up with small, multi-tiered greens and difficult rough. Several hole have blind shots, adding to the challenge. I was able to play as a single without waiting. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. A nice hidden gem.
Fun course
Course was in good shape. Not long, but definitely challenging. A shot makers course. I will return soon.
Excellent course
Fun, shot makers course in great condition. Staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. Definitely will return.
Good little course
Enjoyed my time here coming back to Charlotte from Tryon. Nice little country 9 hole course. Pretty straightforward layout- no water or sand. Greens are really nice and looks like other players take care of them.. Green to tee transitions are close so that part makes it walkable. Just some elevation changes that make it more of a workout. $12 to walk 9 on a nice Saturday afternoon.
This course has lots of potential
I enjoy playing this course, not very long but smaller and firmer greens make up for it ,but low scores are possible.
