An absolute “must-play”

From the moment you step foot near the clubhouse, you are greeted warmly by the staff who really appreciates having you there. Talk about a change of pace! Most places you play now act like they’re doing you a favor by letting on their course. Asheboro Municipal just isn’t that place.

While the practice area isn’t world class, the putting green is in fantastic shape, especially for a municipal course. The bent-grass greens have been well manicured, watered, and cared for, and the practice green is no different. The driving range is more of a short game area, as it maxes out at 160 yards. Also, bring your own balls and shag bag if you’re planning on using it. They don’t have range balls yet.

The course itself was in great shape. Fairways hadn’t been mowed in a few days, but we’re still plush. Tee boxes were also in great shape, aside from a few areas on the par-3’s where divots have taken a bit of a toll. Bunkers weren’t perfect, but had plenty of sand. Greens are small, and can be difficult to hit. Most slope from back to front with #9 being the most severe....good luck if you’re not below the hole.

I love the layout. Pine trees frame the majority of the holes and challenge you to work the ball both ways off the tee to give yourself a good look at the green. The par-3’s can be a little intimidating given the pine trees that hang over and create a window thru which you’re forced to hit the ball.

I do recommend looking at your scorecard for each hole’s layout because there are a couple of shots where water does come into play. It may help with your club selection off the tee.

You can’t beat this course for the price ($10 to walk 18!). I drove from Greensboro to play, and I’ll be back. Everyone at this course couldn’t have been any nicer. Do yourself a favor...make the drive to play a Donald Ross course for a fraction of the price. You won’t regret it.

A 9-holer That Keeps You Coming Back 4 More

This is a gem and very well maintained by the City of Asheboro. One of the few (if not the only) original Donald Ross designs in the country that no one else has tried to give it a face-lift. The first 3 holes are open so it tempts you to go Driver, PW/9I into the green but rarely does that happen successfully. #4 is the only Par 5 and you CANNOT miss left, and oh if you miss right you could be around the #8 green area with a punch out in your future. #5 is the first of two tight Par 3's and starts your 4 hole journey we locals call "In The Pines" as it is tight and demands an accurate tee ball as well as approach. #9 is a dogleg sweeper to the right of which you can hit a great tee ball through the left side of the fairway if not careful, or leave it right in the rows of pine trees which is "punch out city". This is the home course for the local high school (Asheboro Blue Comets) and I know from experience that this little 9 holer offers some of the highest collective averages year after year. It looks so tame to the eye, and that is what keeps you coming back because you just know you can do better than your last effort. A joy to play and it does not break your bank account.

Great Old Course

Asheboro Municpal is probably the best value I've found since moving to NC. I may be biased because I'm a huge Donald Ross fan, but I think it's a great track. You can't beat $10 to walk all you can play!!

The course isn't long but the greens are very small which make it challenging. The course also requires the player to work the ball both ways off the tee. Don't need driver much, but you'd better be accurate.
