Course has "sharp edges"
The earlier review is good as far as talking about gettin on base, the grill and the layout of the course as being a pretty decent municipal parkland type layout. There are two things about the course to be aware of however. The gold pro I get my lessons from describes the course as having sharp edges, meaning that it is very easy to lose balls once you get off the fairway. The rough tends to be fairly thick and narrow and then you hit the areas of tumbleweeds, both internal to the course and then fully surrounding the course. Even a mild right slice will put you in areas of hard-packed dirt and tumbleweeds. It doesn't really have anything to do with course maintenance it's just the way the location is, on a military base out in the desert. The other issue is general course maintenance, which is pretty bad right now. I have spoken with some long-time players on this course and they said course upkeep is completely dependent on whether or not the current base commander is a golfer. I take it the current person does not golf. There are frequent burst pipes in the winter, the on-course bathrooms and water fountains haven't worked on at least two years, there are patches on the fairways that need repair and in the fall the course is thick with cottonwood leaves so it can be quite difficult to find your ball even if you put it smack in the middle of the fairway. Even so, while the local municipal courses are full this course almost always has availability and it's really not a bad course just bring some extra balls.
Great No Frills Course
Nothing fancy at this place just a very good but basic "Muny" style course. The staff is friendly, the facilities are basic but the course is usually is pretty good condition.
Be forewarned that you have to be able to access Kirtland AFB to get to this course so unless you are current or retired military and such then your chances of playing this course is slim to none. However, those who can will enjoy playing here.
The grounds crew does a great job even though they have limited staff and limited hours. The Food is basic "Grill" stuff, nothing fancy. Some mornings this course can get rather hectic but if you avoid the crowds this course is a treat.
Bottom Line: don't expect anything but a good basic golf course that will make you smile.
