Mattawang Golf Club
About
Mattawang Golf Club has changed very little since it first opened in 1960. The traditional layout has withstood the test of time as a challenging but playable layout. The course was designed to blend seamlessly into the natural setting while still testing your shot-making skills. You won’t find any man-made water hazards or artificial mounding on this golf course, instead you’ll be challenged by natural streams and ponds and mature evergreens. At first glance, the layout is seemingly wide open, but don’t let your guard down because the fairways are actually quite tight and many of them are strategically lined with trees. In keeping with the time it was built, the greens are smaller than those you would find on most modern golf courses and heavily protected by sand traps. Over the years, Mattawang Golf Club has built a reputation for having some of the well maintained putting surfaces in the area.

Well Kept Course
I have been playing for years and the management really puts in an effort to maintain the course and continue to improve tee boxes and fairways. The course is in great shape and the back Nine is challenging as ever. Will be heading back there soon.
Went downhill
I played this a couple years ago. I liked it a lot. The conditions now are a lot worse. Greens were bumpy, fairways have some crabgrass looking stuff growing in them. a lot of bare ground if you're off the fairway. Its a shame. I hope they recover. It's a nice little track
Great staff and challenging too!
Some of the friendliest staff I have ever met working here
The course is very challenging and play was fairly quick
Be aware there is no food or drinks available
Still well worth the trip!
Course is in terrible shape
Course is in absolutely awful shape. I haven’t ever seen it this bad. Whoever is running the grounds crew has little to no experience working on a golf course. Its honestly not even worth $25 for 18 holes right now, let alone $60
Course conditions were horrible outside of the tee boxes and the putting green (I didn't use the driving range). Very dry and many bare spots in fairways, rough and on greens. Was disappointed that twice on our front nine the starter lectured us about our pace of play. We finished the front nine in 2:05 and he told us twice we needed to pick it up because we were playing too slow.
Course near death
I played this course on Fathers Day and am sorry to say that I have never seen it in worst condition. Except for cutting the grass, it looks like nobody actually takes care
of the course. Multiple fairways are overgrown with weeds. Almost every green had large sections of dead grass and bare sandy spots. I can’t really comment on the bunkers because i fortunately only hit into 1 during the round. Tees were fair at best, some had dead, sandy areas.
I started playing here around 6 years ago and at that time is was in good shape. I know from experience that the course doesn’t drain well and it appears that most of the damage on the course is a result of the poor drainage.
It’s a shame to see it in such deplorable condition.
If there is such a thing as a “dying” golf course, this is it.
decent course, be prepared to wait
Went on a beautiful Saturday, I think every cart they owned was out on the course and then add in the walkers....i.e., the place was packed. Left after 14 as it probably would've been close to a 5 hour round. I think some better spacing of tee times might(?) alleviate problem.
Greens were decent, fairways were fine.....a few holes with water and some decent (raked!) traps....Pro-Shop had some chips/water.....shirts.....balls for sale as well as gloves. Front desk attendant was nice.
Would go back when less crowded.
The conditions of the course are horrendous.
The greens were in terrible condition- brown, dirt spots, etc. and the fairways weren’t any better. There were a few fairways with weeds and high strands of grass. Overall upkeep needs improvement. The only saving grace was the pace of play as there weren’t many golfers out…
Good course for the money
Course is in good condition, most important things like tee boxes and greens are in mid-season form. Pace of play is great. When I need to get in a round in under 4 hours it’s my go to spot
Basic golf
We have played here about a dozen times in the last three years. No bar or restaurant, no drink cart just basic golf. Pace of play is generally good. There is real sand in the bunkers, not like the dry dirt in some other courses. Narrow fairways but not a lot of trees so don't be surprised if you're playing from the adjacent fairway. Obviously I enjoy playing here otherwise I wouldn't have gone back so many times.
Great course!!
Yesterday (11 June 2023) was my 3rd time playing here and booked it for Fathers Day with my son. Nice small warm up range which uses "floater" balls is perfect to get in some swings and the practice putting green next to the parking lot is in great condition. Love the conditions of the tee-boxes and greens. Almost every tee box is crowned in the middle except the par 3 3rd hole. Most if not all greens are sloped back to front just the way they should be. Two (2) fairways (5th, and i think the 11th) have some weed overgrowth but they are small areas and not a major deal.
Been playing nearly 30 years and yesterday I shot shot even par 36 on the front 9 with birdies on holes 2 & 5. I must've ran out of gas in the heat on the back nine and my 8.5 index came back to life! 5 double bogeys, +11, shot 83 total. SMH. about 45 minutes from Staten Island, NY and we will be back many more times! Especially after yesterdays best nine for me and after finding out an extra 9 or 18 holes can be had by paying an additional cart fee (if the course is not booked out).
Thanks for the thorough review, glad to see you enjoy the club and played well. That back nine can be very tough!!
Hope to see you again soon.
It is tough to respond without more info.
