Excellent layout, horrible experience
I went to Elm lake and was very excited about the layout of the course. That is unfortunately where the excitement ended. When we showed up they double booked us so we were backed up in a cluster for the entire 5 hours. The greens were in terrible conditions to where we had to just count a two putt because it was so sandy, holes in the green and even marked areas to move the ball on several holes because the surface was unplayable. The customer service was terrible. As I was backed up the golf pro came to ask us to speed up when we were literally 120 out waiting on the group in front of us to walk off the green. I don’t feel comfortable hitting it onto the green when others are standing on it. Overall just a bad experience and I am sad I wasted $40 to play there. Could have gotten yard work done instead
Wintery Weather but a pleasant round on a nice layout at a very reasonable price
I am visiting the Columbus/Starkville area and have played a few course. While I played the course in the winter (February 2020) with dormant grass, the conditions were fairly good (other than a lot of recent rain). The course has a layout that is interesting and provides a challenge. While mostly flat and fairly wide open (in other words, you can miss the fairway and still find and play the ball) the holes have water in play that requires you to think your way through the course. ALso, the greens are all gently sloping so putts require a good read and the right speed too.
I was very impressed by the opening hole. A par 5 that doglegs slightly right but requires you to mind the water on the second and third shot. The par 4, 13th hole has a stream crossing about 200 out from the tee. You either go for it over the water or lay up with a long iron in,. That's the kind of challenge and thinking I enjoy.
This layout is significantly better than the MSU Golf Course with its straightaway holes and it is half the price. Granted, I have not played either course in prime conditions of Spring to Fall but I bet for the price, this one will still beat out MSU.
Fun even with the weather
I picked a terrible weather day to play but the course was in surprisingly good condition considering the past rains and cold weather. Very friendly accommodating staff. Would recommend if you are in the Columbus area.
This course played well
My foursome enjoyed the round. There were no problems at all. We are well pleased with Elm Lake.
Good value
Greatly improved over the years. Challenging yet fun course.
Great value, good layout, in good conditions and extremely friendly staff! If you're looking for a fund a=day on the course I highly recommend Elm Lake!
Unbeatable
Great course! Joe and staff always treat me like family. Best course in Columbus by far!
Good price
Good price good layout off the beaten path enjoyable
Quality course
The course was in good shape. Greens were running quick but true. The head pro is a super nice guy, very accommodating. Would play again.
Elm lake GC
Straight forward, easy course. Fairways were decent; some greens need grass work. Not much fringe but solid grounds keep.
Disappointed For The Last Time
Played this course many times over last 8 years. First couple rounds were great. Went one time around 2011 and no one said they had temporary greens. Paid full price, was disappointed. Went back year later after $300k investment "fixing greens" and they had temporary greens again. Left and didn't play that day. Tried to give them a chance again today and know what was out there? Weeds in fairway, bare tee boxes with tee markers facing hazards, weeds all over greens, smaller greens, uncut green, no fresh cut cups, greens where mowers missed cutting strips, dead greens, sand traps in middle of greens where greens have died, leaning pins, and worn out practice green free for all! Last time I played Elm Lake in my lifetime.
First time playing course
I played the course after a heavy rain week so the course was wet but the greens looked really good. I will definitely be going back to play this course in the near future. I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone.
Great for the money
Course had green trouble last few years but VERY good now. Rest of course very fair and playable. Pretty open with little tree tree trouble. Great driving range
Great value
It's a very nice well maintained course. Friendly staff and a great layout of the holes. Overall this is where I will be going from now on.
