Nice course but run so poorly
If I were to rank the course it would be an easy 5 stars but the truth is that Nick is the pro shop is a gong show. I have now played out there twice and will NEVER play there again. The first time I played there we made the turn and nick sent off 2 groups in front of us on 10. Who does that?!? And so I talked to him and he seemed like a knowledgeable golfer and he gave us free passes to come back. So today I go back out and Nick told a 4some to tee off on 10 in front of us AGAIN because there were leagues on the front nine. Really?!?! I promise I will not ever be back to this course. We quit after 14 holes because they were so slow. So if you want to enjoy the view during a 4 hour back nine when Nick sends people off in front of you, this is your course! They need someone that knows golf and how to run a course in the pro shop not this chump.
Calderone Grass Lake Hidden Gem
I played over the weekend and got a great deal on Golf Now so my wife and went out to Calderone. The staff was very friendly and we started as a twosome but a single joined us on Hole 2 . The pace was good and the course in pretty good condition considering how hot it had been lately. The greens were very fast and the wind was blowing hard this day. When you play out there the wind usually gusts at times since the front plays like a links course and the back is more of a hybrid of link and wood lined fairways. The was my 5 time out there and have enjoyed it each time.
What a value!
What a beautiful course, the front nine links style layout is to die for. Undulating fairways, lots of tall fescue along the sides to steal away any errant balls, and the large manicured rolling greens make it a challenging, yet appealing course. The back Woodlands style nine is nicely laid out. You feel as if you are playing two different courses. We played our 18 in just over four hours, could have been quicker, but the beauty of the course made the slight wait on the tee boxes acceptable. We enjoyed a pitcher of Blue Moon on the 19th green for fabulous price! I cannot wait to go back!
Good, challenging course offering two types of courses in one
Have played this course several times and it's always in great shape. Front nine is open links style, where wind typically is a factor. Back nine is tree-lined with several holes with forced carries off the tee box. Greens are large and true.
Nice course.
Nice course with the pace being pretty fast. Greens were pretty quick...
Great course, terrible clubhouse
I got this course for a hot deal and it was my first time playing it. Course was in great condition even with all the rain, very long and challenging, provides an excellent test to your golf game. The Views weren't so great and the clubhouse had zero food and minimal drink options but had made sure to have plenty of booze. Staff seemed somewhat overwhelmed and rude even on a Wednesday afternoon (slow time) but if you make sure to eat before you go and bring your own beverages then I would suggest this course to any type of golfer.
Slow, Slow, Slow
Good course, but the overall experience was disappointing. Upon our arrival for an afternoon starting time we were informed the practice range was closed and there were no carts available until groups coming off 18 turned them in. Pace of play was extremely slow..3 hours to play the front..and the lack of a ranger was very disappointing. At one point on the back I watched a group teeing off a few hours ahead of us "hit till they were happy" with two open holes in front of them. Again, the presence of a ranger would have been helpful.
Day at Calderone
This is a challenging course with some long holes. The course was in good shape. A lot of sand traps and the sand in some of them was not great so just don't go in there. We had a lot of fun!
Top 10 course in Michigan
I will go back an play this course over & over again
Nice Track
Great course layout. Challenging and fair. Course in pretty good condition for early in the year.
Great Course
A fun challenge. Great price. Greens in good condition. Outhouses on hills that make exiting difficult. Staff very friendly.
good value but always over booked
Need a real ranger! Course is pretty sweet but being a difficult course with a bunch of trouble spots, lesser golfers may want to hit the range before coming out to play.
LINKS STYLE AT A GREAT A GREAT RATE
Arguably the best links course in the area. You will use all of your clubs on this course especially the long ones. Most holes are forgiving with generous greens. You can't beat the green fees for such a quality course.
CALDERONE FROM THE BLACK TEES...BIG BOY GOLF!
Calderone is very easy to get to, just off of Michigan 94 east of Jackson. When you drive into the parking lot one finds a very unassuming clubhouse with a small pro shop.
My son and I, both scratch golfers, were attracted by the links style, British/Scottish layout that Calderone advertises. We were not disappointed!
From the first hole to the last we found ourselves in an all out war with a course that offers length, undulating greens and lots of trouble to get into bordering the well groomed fairways. Keeping the ball in the fairway off of the tee is critical here. Straying left or right will present you with lies you don't want to deal with! Lots of natural areas with tall grasses and tangled underbrush. From the black tees you must be able to drive the ball at least 250 yards or you have no chance of reaching many of the par 4's in two. Multiple sand trap complexes line the fairways and guard the greens. Additionally, the course is very hilly and seldom do you have a stance over the ball that is not uphill, downhill or side hill.
The green speed was about 10 the day we played. Surprisingly, there was not a lot of break on most putts. Above the hole on the green is not recommended and below the pin requires a certain amount of bravado to strike the ball hard enough to get it to the hole and not run too far by if you miss.
I highly recommend that you play this course if you are nearby. It is a true test of golf and will examine your game completely!
The price was great
they had a outing in front of our group . made the round long as they were having their own fun back and forward on the course. I always enjoy the course.
good variety of holes
I like this course a lot, It has a great change of pace in style
from the links type front nine to a more traditional back nine.
This course is a must play
Course is playable for the average golfer and yet can be very challenging for the more experience. Definitely must add this course to your play list.
The course in great shape
The greens, fairways, and rough are as they should be. The traps need work. Weather was great.
Step up the maintenace.
Love the layout but some of the greens need attention.
