Nothing Great, I wouldn't play again or recommend.

Tee boxes and fairways in OK shape, greens were like putting on wet cement. Very hard holes, and the hard, dry rough made it even harder. Slight slice/slight hook=woods. By the 8th hole i realized it wasn't worth taking a good ball out of the bag. Pin placements on some holes were crazy, almost if a pro tournament was going to be there. But this course certainly isn't hosting a pro tournament. Course is very congested, some tee boxes very close to each other, greens close to tee boxes, and fairways near fairways. Watch out on the cart path from hole 2 to 3, as there are overgrown prickers on it. We were driving along and one hit me on my arm. I think a lot of the people staying at the hotels right near the course get suckered into playing it. Don't be another victim of Sable Oaks.

Only played the front but good track!

Played this track on Monday for the first time and the back nine was closed due to aerifications which was no big deal since they let us play the front 9 twice for a 9-hole rate. This course is tough though, rough is high and shaping the ball off the tee is a must...from the back 2 sets of tees at least. I really enjoyed the par-3's here, lots of change of elevation and overall a good, fun memorable course. Only wish it had some better deals as it can get a little pricey at times.

Short, tight, and difficult

Me and my friends drove from New York City to visit Portland and overall I think the 5 hour plus drive was worth it.

We played on a holiday weekend but the course never seemed too crowded or overplayed. We never had to wait to hit our next shots and the staff was extremely courteous and friendly. One of the pro shop attendants even ran out to his own car to grab me some sunscreen when I forgot mine at home.

The actual golf course was in very good condition and I was surprised at how hilly the course was. The fairways are narrow and usually have heavily wooded areas to both sides. If you don't keep the ball in the fairway it will be difficult to approach the greens. The greens were fairly mundane but manicured nicely. Overall, a very nice course--would definitely go back.

Thumbs Up!

Sable Oaks was in GREAT condition! I had the course all to myself! Walked and played 18 holes in less than 3 hours. GolfNOW day of rate was excellent ($25) and included a cart but I chose to walk...still a great greens fee rate regardless.

Decent Course For Money Some Really Tight Holes

Haven't played this course in a while, forgot how tight some of the holes are. Two straight holes have small greens with hazards right up to the green, and punishment if you go long too. Bit ridiculous for a public course full of duffers.

Pick Your Spots on This One

Sable Oaks has been an enigma to public golfers for about 25 years now. Most who have played probably found it too tough to return to. I think several hundred trees have been taken out over the years in an attempt to make it friendlier and to improve conditions. The truth is, an 18 handicapper will be lucky to break 105 and lose fewer than 10 balls. I do enjoy the course at twilight when it is very quiet and the sounds of trees being walloped and marshes being splatted into are few. I can walk 18 holes in just over 3 hours on most evenings. I imagine that same round on a busy day or on any weekend would be well over 5 hours. The course is built into a hillside with many rocky outcroppings and wet low spots. It is almost always in great condition. The greens are some of the best in Maine this season. The 3rd hole is a great par 4 that requires a big drive out towards a marsh that is about 280 yards out. Then its a 150+ yard second shot to a very elevated green with a false front. On the back, the 13th is a testing par 3 of 160+ yards to a tiny green with a marsh in front of it and hillside trees behind. It is all carry and you cannot be at all short. Sable is the quietest of the 5 public 18 hole courses in a 5 mile radius. It may be too tough for hackers, but skilled players can be challenged by it. Just pick the right time spot that will keep you from going insane on this torture track.
