Course closed in 2017
I played the course several years before it closed and at that time, it was one of the top 2 or 3 public courses in the state. Course was visible from I-64 and was part of a subdivision. However, the were not home on every hole.
I was surprised the course closed as it had a tremendous layout built of typical rolling Kentucky land. It was well bunkered and required you to think your way around the course.
such a shame
the course is closed...what a waste...such a shame
SAD - Owner should sell to a Committed Buyer!
I played this course because Golf Digest listed it as the #2 Best Public Course in Kentucky.
The layout reflects that! It is an excellent challenging layout.
Course conditions - horrible. It appears that the Grounds crew was greatly reduced. Weeds, lack of attention, overgrown plants, grass, bushes - etc. Very Poor condition. The wooden steps walking up to the Pro-shop are breaking apart and are dangerous!. Many holes had no ball washers, and half that did there was no towels, handle broken, no water.
One of the locals that I talked to stated - ever since the owner dies, his son took over and has stopped maintaining the course.
Regardless if true or not - the Owner should sell and allow a Committed Owner to refurbish the course and bring it back to respectability.
The course and grounds condition is pathetic.
I only paid $14 which included a cart - a great buy almost anywhere. But I think I overpaid!
Tough but beautiful
This course is very challenging for the average golfer. It was a pleasure playing it and enjoying the beautiful scenery.
Bad experience
This course was a great place to come play years ago. Now not so much. Tee boxes bad , weeds in them. Bunkers was horriable , no sand in bunkers .I
know this is October ,BUT could be kept much better . Would not play here again.
Wonderful greens
Course was in pretty good shape, the greens were excellent! The bunkers are all totally unplayable which really took away from the course.
Bad Bad Bad
This use to be one of my favorite trips to take. Old Silo WAS my favorite course to play. Its all in a shambles now. I've never seen a course with so much crabgrass. even the fairways have it. Labor day weekend we played 54 holes. I bet I only saw 5 maybe 6 groups other than ours. Its a shame to see a Grahm Marsh design go to the weeds. Get it back to its formal glory and I may come back and play it again. Until then I'll spend my money elsewhere. Say like Kendalville Indiana.
not what it used to be
This course is a shadow of what it used to be, fairways full of crab grass, bunkers horrible, crabgrass around the greens, greens are not too bad, but not they used to be or could be, great layout but in need of care. it is a shame what this place has become, I played it a lot when it was new, and it was a show place, but no more.
Bad day golfing
Course was in terrible shape !! Sand traps were horrible !! Rough next to fairways was to tall !!
BAD
course not in good shape......sand traps are either ground under repair or full of grass.....not worth the money to play here....gibson bay in lot better shape and better price
Major disappointment
I have played this course about 5-10 times over the past 8 years and really enjoyed it. The course has a great layout and is very challenging. I booked a weekend tee time for $40 thinking that I was getting a steal for this course. Little did I know, I would be very disappointed. I will not go back to this course as all the features are very poor. All bunkers have not been maintained for over 6 months and are now waste areas. The rough was about a foot tall (which I understand can be to make it challenging) but it was all crab grass. The greens rolled at a decent speed but had not been manicured in a while and no one out there fixes their ball marks anymore. The fairways were the longest I have ever seen them and had several spots where the maintenance crew messed up via oil or dropping the blade too soon. To say the least, I will never be going back to what used to be an absolutely stellar and beautiful course which was a great attraction to bring golfers to Mount Sterling.
Bunkers
This course desperately needs upkeep. There are over 100 bunkers on this course and not one has been touched in years. Mud, weeds and an occasional grain of sand remain. A few truckloads of sand would make a world of difference. Their big advertisement is "Best Public Course in Ky". Maybe 10 years ago. Not in the top 50 today.
Has potential... Sad to see a course look like that
To start off, the course layout is amazing. Each hole has its own name and they are very cleverly named and has the potential to be amazing. The greens and fairways were pretty nice... HOWEVER, the rough was crazy tall. I can understand it to an extent, but when you hit a great drive and it gets a bad kick off the fairway into the rough and you can't find it because the grass is too tall. Its not expectable. You pay more in golf balls than you do for the round itself. The bunkers is on a whole new low... Not one bunker had enough sand in it to play out of, let alone any at all, and when you did hit it in the bunker, there was so much standing water in them that you needed a ball retriever. Just sad to see potential go to waste.
Played for 26 bucks on a hot deal, and I still feel that was too much for the round. We didn't get behind anybody... But that was because there were maybe 15 cars in the parking lot on a Sunday afternoon... You can take that as you want.
Course gone bas
This course use to be AMAZING. I played it a few years ago and was very impressed. However, that isn't the case now. The greens and fairways are in good shape. The greens were very fast. But the light rough is basically weeds. A sand bunker basically doesn't exist. What is left of what use to be sand bunkers is either mudd, grass or water holes. The course is about a 15-20 dollar course, nothing more.
Completely Neglected
We drove in from out of town for a wedding and decided to play this course because of its golf digest top public course ranking. It's evident that this course was beautiful at one time, from the golf digest review it wasn't that long ago, but its current state is pitiful. The greens were shaggy and beat up, tee boxes were all overgrown, fairways were covered in clovers, and every bunker on the golf course was marked as ground under repair-probably because they have no sand and are overgrown with weeds. It was terribly sad to see what looked like it used to be a premier golf course totally neglected.
In trouble
The design is great, no boring holes, but most of the bunkers are ruined and marked ground under repair. That takes away a lot of the difficulty. They had too much rain the past 18 months, they said, and are working on them "as time permits". Seems to me the larger issue might be money. It is a good value for the price now, even without bunkers. The grill room was closed, only opens for weekends now. Greens and fairways were in good shape, fairways hard and fast, greens not so much.
Can be as challenging as you like
Most bunkers are layouts and clover can be found in the rough, but other than that it is in great shape. I play from the black tees. it is long and demands that you fade the ball on some holes and draw it on others to achieve a desirable 2nd shot. Bent grass everywhere. Lots of great scenery. I've played a lot of PGA tournament courses less challenging than this one. Most people play from the white tees to take a lot of danger out of the round. Built for any golfer to enjoy.
Old Silo
Heard this was good course. Great layout but conditions were very poor. Bunkers were overgrown with weeds, grass, etc. Fairways not cut. Most greens were good, but some were painted. Carts were not clean, had broken windows, one barely made it up hills.
Cannot recommend this course at its current pricing.
Old Silo is an architectural masterpiece!
Graham Marsh's design is nestled into the rolling hills and mountains of central Ky. This course is so pleasing to the eye with its plethora of wildlife and lengthy yardage. Whether just passing through or if you live around the area you owe it to yourself to play a round at this truly underrated gem of a golf club! Friendly staff, fully stocked pro shop, range and putting/chipping greens, full bar and grill. What are you waiting for? Stop readin and book a round already!
This course has great layout
I've played this course for many years and it never gets old. It is my favorite course in the state and love to play it when I have the opportunity. Love the layout and the course has a lot of character. Great course in great shape. Golf staff was very friendly and helpful. Overall, every time I play there it is a great experience. I would highly recommend playing at Old Silo.
