Cinder Ridge Golf Course in Wilmington, Ill. is proof that with a little creativity almost any landscape can be transformed into a challenging setting for golf. From playing the scenic layout you would never be able to guess that the site operated as a strip mine from the 1920s to the late '50s. George Kappos bought the land in 1977 and designed a golf course, carving it from the natural contours of the terrain and routing it through swamp and wetlands. Playability is a theme throughout, from the possibility for several different tee positions to the welcoming greens that are receptive to approach shots. There are 68 strategically placed sand traps and water hazards that come into play on 14 holes. The 16th is Cinder Ridge's most talked-about hole. The abundance of sand is what makes this 133-yard, par 3 stand out; it has eight bunkers surrounding its circular green.
