Round at the Elks
On a beautiful day for golf we teed off on time and knew it would be slow going. The front nine was busy and the play was slow, but we managed to stay calm and enjoy our day. At the turn the pace picked up, but only when we played through a fivesome (not good) and a foursome of senior ladies who were trying to have fun. Losing two holes was frustrating as those two holes would have been very nice had we played them. After that we (two of us) move at a very rapid pace around the nicely conditioned course which had recently watered the fairways making for a longer golf course. We enjoyed our day and the course and would consider playing here again.
Eclipse Round - Course is worth the drive from Chicago
Simply put I love this place. Country Club atmosphere with no pretense. $22 incl fees with cart hot deal on a Monday. A complete no brainer! Play it! We were virtually the only ones on the golf course for the Eclipse. Pontiac Elks is a really fun fairly well conditioned golf course. Some brown out conditions in the fairways this year, traps are mainly dirt however the greens were in fantastic shape with good speed and a nice smooth roll to them. Grass range, locker room with great showers and great prices on beverages....Elks hospitality. The halfway house wasn't open (the course doesn't return after the 9th) but with the extremely light Monday tee sheet who cares! (Scroll down to my previous review of this course for more info). 4.5 stars the only downgrades are the traps and some areas of brown patchy fairways. Awesome value. Make the day of it...take part of Historic Old 66 to get there.
(Another secret - another track just north of Pontiac is Wolf Creek GC.....I stopped in there on the way and it appears to be in even better condition than Pontiac Elks.....another course worth the drive to play and a really good value...look for hot deals).
All in all it was pretty amazing day. Shortly after 11am we started the front nine at Pontiac Elks Country Club with an intermittent light drizzle and really muggy 85 degree conditions. At the 5th green it began to rain with conviction so we then took cover for about 10 minutes under a tree near the 6th tee box. The skies then started to clear and by the time we were at the 7th green the effects of our 88pct partial eclipse were becoming evident. The temperature dropped about 10 degrees a cooler light wind started to blow with unpredictability. We made the turn and arriving at the10th tee it was really dusky and tough to see our tee shots finish caused by an eerie twilight. This was further enhanced by crickets chirping and birds making weird calls along the Vermillon River. It was still cooler on the 11th and 12th holes featuring several hawks flying around in the sky erratically. Reaching the 13th green the temperature had almost rebounded up to the same hot muggy conditions we began the round with. It was summer again. A total eclipse of the fun.
Good Quality Course
I have played Pontiac Elks 10-15 times and always enjoy my round here. Some challenging holes, with some lengthy holes and usually a stiff breeze coming in off the interstate. One of the few courses around that have a "half-way house" with the 9th hole not finishing anywhere near the clubhouse so not an easy course to only play 9 holes as you are quite a ways from the clubhouse at the turn. Course is semi-private country club that never disappoints.
Fun day of Golf
Course was in great shape. We got paired up with a really nice couple and they were fun to play with and knew the course well. It was windy, but still had a nice day for golf. Has a few holes that dog leg and then you shoot over water so that was fun. Friendly staff and there is a half way house at #9 with food and drinks. Would play again.
DV
Greens were very fast, but rolled great. Lost a few balls off of the fairway due to leaves on the ground, but on Nov. 10, what do you expect. What a great deal!
Challenging but not overwhelming for seniors
Great course to play especially with GolfNow discounts. Senior tees are appropriate - still challenging but not overwhelming. Unfortunately in good weather in October the half-way house has been closed (thus the rating for off-course amenities). The first 9 ends a long, long distance from the club house.
Perfect Fall Day
Was a beautiful, calm Fall day. Very few leaves for this time of year. Very few people on the course. We felt like it was our own course. The course was excellent for this time of year. The greens rolled true. Was the third time playing this year. Each time, the course was very good and the people have been very helpful and friendly. One of the best values for Central Illinois.
This course very well maintained!
The staff very helpful and polite. Course invery good condition and greens lots of slope. Bar and resterant good food.
Great Value
Played mid September and 7 of the greens were being arrated. Staff warned us ahead of time. Fairways in beautiful condition and remaining greens were in good shape. Very enjoyable course to play.
Great course
I've played this course many times and it's one of the best in the area. Yesterday wasn't a good example because of all the recent rain but normally the greens roll fast and true. It is a beautiful course and pars are not easy on most holes.
