No, Pete Dye is not the architect.

Turns out Davis Love III and Mark Love like railroad tie planks as well.

The Plantation course at Sea Island is a shotmaker’s delight. The green complexes and use of half-par holes allow this course to emerge from the shadow of its much-heralded sister course.

Don’t be fooled by the yardage on the scorecard. Though there are some short par 4s and all but one par 5 is reachable for some, peril awaits in the form of strategically-placed bunkers that place a premium on hitting your number, even when laying up.

Love Sea Island

Fantastic course. Have played the Seaside course many times. First time on Plantation. Conditions were great. Feel like the greens were running slower than normal. A lot of short par 4’s that challenge your club and shot selection. You absolutely can not go wrong with Sea Island. One of my favorites areas for first rate golf.

What a difference a year makes

As of fall 2018, Sea Island was a one-and-a-half course 54-hole resort, which is to say it had one stunner in the Seaside, one decent second option in the Retreat and a bit of a clunker in the Plantation, which had been tortured over the decades into a red-headed stepchild.

Now, thanks to local resident Davis Love III, that's all changed. The new Plantation is as fun a resort golf course as you could ask for, given the flat terrain. Love's appreciation for Golden Age architecture has made all the difference. Where the previous course demanded aerial attacks, its new self prides itself on diversity of challenge and playability. Where its previous iteration was shaped in a standard late-20th-century style, now it looks crisp and new while containing plenty of old-world touches, like chocolate-drop mounds, railroad ties and squared-off green edges. Plus, after your round, you get to drink golf's best sweet tea and take non-private golf's best shower.

A nice course but nothing spectacular

This is a nice course with many fine golf holes in a very pretty setting. The course has a good mix of hole types. There just isn't anything, other than the surrounds, that really stands out. There are some water holes and the fairway corridors are decently wide. A few holes are memorable in their set-up, such as an island green or greens perched by the water. I've read that they are going to completely make the course over next year so I hope to play again after it is re-done.

Nice enough, but ready for renovation

The Plantation course has always been second-fiddle to the Seaside at Sea Island. Rees Jones' 1998 renovation certainly installed a stern challenge at the course, but the straightforward demands of the course have fallen out of favor in recent years. When Scot Sherman and Love Golf Design renovate it, starting in December 2019, they will give it a much-needed refresh from a stylistic and strategic perspective. This will put it in much closer competition with the Seaside, which will nevertheless always have an advantage because of its superior land. But the new Plantation will close the gap considerably.

Nice course with tough elevated greens.

Plantation is the sister course to Seaside and it very enjoyable. Not a memorable course like Seaside but challenging. Hole #10 and #18 are great holes.

Golf Channel Am Tour

Round 2 was played on this course. The first was on the seaside course. This review can be for both.
The weather was not great (cold and windy) however everything else about the event was great. Well maybe not my score. lol. The staff was exceptional. The course conditions were great for this time of year in fact the greens rolled super fast and true. The accommodations are first class. This was a great venue for the GCAT and the 5 stars says it all. A must to place to stay and play. BTW, the price was for the event so I am not sure what the green fees were but its worth it.

Plantation is a solid secondary track!

Plantation at Sea Island resort is definitely secondary to the premier sister course at Seaside, but its still a big time course with lots of challenges. Plantation is more inland and off the coast but still gets a good bit of wind, especially on number 10. This course isn't overseeded but you would never know it because of how green it is in the middle of January. I enjoyed playing the course and the variety of holes that it had to offer but the greens were very challenging and tougher to read because the grain is almost impossible to read as its not as apparent as Seaside's greens. Plantation can be more sneaky tough as there is a lot of water crossing mid-fairways or peninsula/island greens that isn't very obvious unless you've played the course previously. Overall a wonderful addition and complement to the Sea Island resort golf courses but Seaside is the definite premier course to play.

Hosting the Tour will shine the spotlight on Plantation

Plantation will always live in the shadow of Seaside, but at least it will finally get a piece of the spotlight by hosting a portion of the McGladrey Classic for the first time in 2015. With the same amenities as Seaside - the awesome practice facilities along the ocean/sound and access to the swank men's locker room inside The Lodge - Plantation is a four-star course that delivers a five-star experience. Ponds threaten throughout the round on a layout redone by Rees Jones in 1998. Golfers play the 10th hole along the water, then head inland on this parkland-by-the-sea ... never far enough to escape the wind, however.

Watch out for Wind

We played on a very windy day and it was very tough. I have never seen tee boxes as immaculately maintained as these. They are as good as some greens that I play. The greens were very fast but very true!!! Fairways were awesome. Practice area was very nice. Can be very penal if you misshit the ball. Fairways dont have lot of rough so wayward shots will get wet. There are several holes where you choose how much of the marsh to carry.....be conservative and safe. Some of the greens have shaved areas so chips can come back to your feet. Our group had never played the course and there were some shots that were a little blind. Would be helpful to take a 4caddie if possible. Staff is super friendly!! GREAT COURSE!!!
