Excellent, but........

From tee to green course was in great shape. Nice practice facility, nice chipping, putting area..really nice... but the cup conditions were horrid..no way a course this nice should ever let the cups look like they had not been changed in what looks like a week.

Beautiful March Day

Challenging layout with many sloped fairways which could give you an unexpected good bounce or make an otherwise good shot roll OB so knowledge of the course and use of GPS are helpful. Fairways, bunkers, and greens were all in great shape and the pin placements made holes challenging. I can’t recall the last time I saw the top two handicapped holes on the course were par 5’s but this course has it and they have it right.
Would definitely come back here again and recommend to anyone who has the chance to play here.

Tricky Test

Hamilton Mill Golf Club has been my home course for over 10 years. In that decade I have seen it be everything from Exclusively Private, to open to the public, to now being owned by Club Corp. One thing that hasn't changed is the challenge that Gene Bates and Fred Couples have left for golfers.

This golf course uses terrain as either a challenge or a benefit, depending on how you account for it. For example, on holes 2 and 3, there are certain "speed slots" as members have always referred to them, that will add up to 50 yards on your drive. However, there are some spots that will send your ball rolling further away from green or even into a hazard.

When this golf course gets green, there aren't many courses that are prettier. Hole 4 might be one of the best looking Par-3s in the Atlanta area, as it is a 170 yard hole with a tee shot all over water. Hole 13 is a beast of a Par 5, stretching to over 600 yards, all 3 of shots require a keen sense of accuracy.

In all, if you have the opportunity to play Hamilton Mill, I highly encourage it, as it will test your game, but be an enjoyable round at the same time. After your round the 19th hole is a very nice one, that has recently undergone renovations, and welcomes members both after their round, as well as for the homeowners who don't get the same enjoyment out of golf that you and I do!

Visually Challenging Layout

Hamilton Mill has an interesting layout that presents many visual obstacles. Most of the obstacles are very manageable with well-considered and accurate shots. The course was not in good condition for this round. Despite being recently aerated and sanded, the greens were fast. The front nine greens were bumpy, but receptive. The back nine greens were bumpy and quite hard. It seemed that the cups had been left in one position for several days. Fairways were generally in good condition and the rough was long. The rough had recently been cut and had an accumulation of grass clippings that further complicated finding the ball even a few feet from the fairway. The bunkers needed grooming and a few needed some minor repair. Overall the tee boxes were worn down more than expected for this time of year. I like this course, but anticipated better conditioning. Hamilton Mill is a private course and it is difficult to assess value. If this were a semi-private course, a sub $45 weekday fee would be reasonable for this area.

Club Corp is doing some great work here, love this course!

Recently played a round here on a Friday morning and we loved it. Pace of play was about 4 hours. The course is in perfect shape right now and the greens are rolling so well. Club corp recently bought out canongate and has spent a chunk of change renovating the clubhouse here and it just opened and it looks like a 5-star restaurant/banquet hall now.

Anyways, the Fred Couples designed course can be tricky but there's lots of very entertaining holes to have fun with. The first two par-3's are 2 of my favorite holes to play in Gwinnett.

Player tips: keep tee balls left on no 2 as the hill will kick everything right. Be sure to keep your tee shots right on no 5 as the tree will block your approach. The par-3 8th plays shorter than you realize so be careful.

Correction: The Hamilton Mill website says Fred Couples AND Gene Bates. My apologies.

Fred Couples did not design this golf course. Common misconception
