Good Place

I played this course for the first time today, it was fun. The greens were in great shape the rest of the course was nice but nothing special. It is a good local course for the price.

Very good Muni.

I did a lot of research on local courses since I was on vacation for a week in St Pete. The good reviews were correct in this case as the course was in very good condition. Fairways were in great shape and greens rolled true. Bunkers could use a little more sand but were in good shape. The staff was also one of the best I have experienced on a public course. No cart guys but pro shop and starters could not have been better. Cons would be the range which is in poor shape but adequate for warming up. And the carts did not have windshields or club covers for the rain. I understand it’s a muni but I was surprised by this being in FL with all the rain that the area tends to get. Of course it was raining for first 4 holes the day I went and I did not have rain gear, shame on me. Little turned off by the $8 charge for a single cart. I shared with pro shop and they explained it was for extra cleaning. I gladly paid it for safety, but don’t feel it is appropriate. Under $50 total was worth every penny. Will definitely return if I am in the area in the future.

Amazing value and great shape

We try and play here with a few guys once a week. The value in the afternoon is incredible, and with the condition of the course there aren't many values like this around Tampa. The greens are in great condition and rolling true. The only problems I ever have here can be pace of play, but that's to be expected with stacked up 4-somes of various skill.

We will keep playing every week as long as the course keeps up the condition.

excellent

excellent day of golf, warm up with the range, short game area, practice putting green or practice chipping green. Rates are very fair and course is very well maintained, never an issue with fairway condition in florida heat or greens.

Surprising Municipal

When I first rolled up I could tell the course is in good shape. There was 2 courses on this property, I played the 18 hole Mangrove Bay and was far from disappointed. Typically when I think (or play) muni courses I expect slower bumpy greens but such was not the case as all of the greens were in phenomenal shape and rolled not fast but very nice. The fairways were also in great shape, you can see where spots get wet but nothing that ever got in the way. The layout was not bad, nothing to really write home about but enjoyable. The practice facilities were amazing, range and there were putting greens everywhere. Once again I will say I was floored by the fantastic conditions at this city course. It’s worth the slightly higher price tag.

Great Par3!!!

Cypress Links is a wonderful local resource that provides some challenging holes yet can be fun for the novice players. As an example, even a 17 handicapper like myself has a shot at making a hole in one and after a long dry spell of almost 60 years, I've made 3 aces within the past six months. The course is typically in good condition but can be dry when the seasonal rains are light. The staff are all fabulous and if you're really lucky, your name might even be drawn for a week of free green fees. Nearby is the 18 hole regulation Mangrove Bay course that has very nice practice options with a driving range, chipping with bunker practice and a separate chipping and putting green. Occasionally, their veverage carts will swing by Cypress Links to offer a cold drink on a hot day but softer drinks are always available in the golf shop where you can get good deals on their golf shoes. Local residents can also purchase an annual membership card for disounts on greet fees so a great local resource and snowbirds alike.

Mangrove bay is in good shape right now.

I've played this course many times growing up, even taking 1st Tee summer camp lessons here. The course shape has always been hinging on the Florida weather and how much maintenance can keep up with the heat.

Simply put, I loved playing here recently. The course is in great shape. Greens are intact with little markings are rolling well enough (they have never been super slick). The fairways and tee boxes are perfectly green. The sand traps have never been super high quality but they are adequate.

The layout for this course is on of the best selling points. It has been one of my favorites for the area. There are some great long holes here. Its hard to imagine how they tuck this nice long course away in the middle of the busy area.

That being said you have to pay for what you get. The greens fees are not horrible if you're a budget golfer as long as you WALK. The cart fees will definitely hurt you here. I believe to rent a push cart its $3.00 and probably what I will do next time I play.

The staff have always been pretty average. I've never had a negative interaction with an employee here, they just seem a little stand off-ish, not really super friendly but that doesn't bother me much. I believe its because of the high volume the course sees so they are likely in business mode trying to get everyone out on the course.

The amenities are great. One of the best driving ranges in the area and I believe the cheapest rates to hit the balls there (9$ for the largest bucket). They have a large putting green and very large chipping green hugging the starters box. They have regular kitchen with burgers and such and also serve hot dogs from the starters box on the turn. There is a cart lady with plenty of beer making rounds on the course.

If you're looking to golf in the area, Mangrove Bay is worth the look.

Old School Fun

Mangrove Bay is located in the city of St Petersburg, Florida and is a local favorite golf destination. Reminiscent the television series "Cheers", it's a gathering spot for friends, hosting business meetings, people watching, learning golf, practicing, and playing a round of golf. The place is busy, but not crowded. Some of the city's most influential people are spotted playing a round, and The First Tee Program of St Petersburg has a strong presence.  Some of the areas best young players have honed their skills here; it's a fun place to be.
This 18 hole championship golf course is a par 72, with a slope rating of 7.5/123 from the Black (championship) tees. There are 4 sets of tee boxes to challenge all skill sets, and is relatively short by today's standards measuring only 6656 from the tips. Due to somewhat wet conditions from an overnight rain, I decided to play the White tees, which is 6112 yards and a has a slope rating of 69.1/119. The course is not difficult, but it is interesting. The fairways are wide and the greens are big. The greens are mildly fast and running about 8 or 9 on the stimpmeter. I like the layout from the standpoint that there are a few par 4s and par 5s that are reachable from the tee box or on your second shot respectively. This is the place to test your confidence and skills under pressure to take those dream shots. This is also the place where questionable golfing skills are exposed. It's a 'no excuse' golf course and there should be no excuse for not shooting your handicap. The course is easy to walk and it's encouraged, though you may want a cart on days when the temperature is above 85 degrees.
Here's what interesting about Mangrove Bay Golf Course: while there are no homes on the golf course, some folks have managed to damage a few homes which are protected by trees and across the canal, on hole #14. Standing on hole 14 tee box you will be asking yourself how is this possible? I don't know, but it seems to be common ocurrance. There is water on 7 of the 18 holes, but there are only 4 holes where it really comes into play; still there are many balls that find the watery graveyard. Again, the fairways are wide and the greens are big, yet hitting fairways and greens seems to a problem. Our group had no problem finding the fairway bunkers and greenside sand traps. For this, I would say the course is cursed. So, it's interesting that what should be relatively easy or a piece of cake, can open doors of excuses, lies, questionable skills, and heaven forbid, cheating!
Mangrove Bay Golf Course is a fun course to play. It has stood the test of time and it's timeless flair and design have the familiarity of ice cold lemonade at a family gathering on a hot summer afternoon - or a cold beer - your choice! The pace of play equates to a comfortable 3.5 or 4.0 hour round. The aesthetics of the course is simple with an old school charm, and it's a good value. The Clubhouse grille is not fancy, offering a good selection of sandwiches and drinks that's easy on your wallet. I have played this course several times solo and with friends. I recommend this course for golfers who enjoy golf and having fun!

Temporary greens, rude staff, no ice in the heat of summer

We enjoy this layout, haven't played here in years. After checking in at the shop we drive to the starter shack to meet a very rude employee, who offers no "hello" or anything of the sort. I then try to buy beers and ask for a cooler with ice. The employee states that they don't have coolers and ice. I find this hard to believe considering it's 96 degrees outside...and also the fact that this will be the first golf course I have ever played at that doesn't offer paying customers ice in the heat of summer. The icing on the cake was next....drove up to the 1st green to discover that all greens are temporary greens, something NOBODY in the shop or the starter shack thought worth mentioning. I will not be coming back here, temporary greens or not.

Unprofessional

Have never played a course in my life that would not give a rain check after they sound the sirens alerting that there is dangerous weather in the area. Played only 6 holes when the sirens sounded and the staff had no problem taking my money and not offering a rain check. Staff was unfriendly and very unprofessional in dealing with the situation! I will not play here again due to staff. I will take my money and play courses that appreciate my business.

Agreed if your referring to some of the staff at Mangrove Bay (the nearby regulation 18 hole course) but the staff at Cypress Links (the nearby Par3) have always been great!

Good Value, Great Facilities!!!

I live locally so I play this course often. the facilities are some of the best in this area. Great range, huge putting green, lob and bunker area, as well as a short game chipping green. the course is pretty open and normally in really good shape. From the Tips the course runs about 6700 yds but is pretty challenging. The course is very open so if the wind is blowing it plays much longer than advertised. The par 5's are long but very open. Some of the shorter Par 4's bring a lot of danger into play so you have to be smart off the tee to score well.
Currently the greens are in rough shape but I'm sure that will be fixed soon.

From what i hear its one of the busiest courses in Florida so be patient and be prepared for a long round. But the prices are fair, and its a course i always recommend.

Happy Golfing!!!

For the love of golf

It's the only championship municipal golf course in Saint Petersburg, and it's a pretty good one. The course itself is more than adequate, laid out among natural mangroves just a few hundred yards from the water. More impressive, however, are the practice facilities, the clubhouse and the par 3, giving this entire facility an in for every kind of player. This is where people who love golf come. No pretense and in some cases, not much in the way of golf clothes, but they all love it.
