Windswept Dunes Golf Course
About
Windswept Dunes Golf Club tumbles across a dramatic landscape covered with white sand dunes accented by lush green fairways. The golf course appeals to players of all skill levels thanks to player-friendly features that are balanced by strategically placed hazards. Although each hole shares the characteristic of being lined with dunes, they each maintain a unique character. The rolling fairways are often wide and generous off the tee and the sand dunes, which stretch from tee too green, are only punishing of the most errant of shots. The approach shots though are as demanding as the tee shots are forgiving. There are numerous bunkers fiercely guarding the large, smooth greens. While the occasional water hazard comes into play, the bunkers are the most challenging element of Windswept Dunes Golf Club.

Outstanding layout
Outstanding layout with largest greens I have ever played. 5-6 iron difference playing into pin, depending on hole placement. Greens were a bit fuzzy putting, winter growth I think. Lots of traps in right places. Started play at 12:30pm and saw no one else on course, you set pace of play. Tees let you chew off as much challenge as you want. Play one more club on all shots into greens. Practice areas are very nice. Planning on going back several times. Golfnow makes this excellent value.
Worth the drive to Freeport
Windswept Dunes is about 30 minutes from Sandestin and worth the trip. With 750 acres there is lots of room for a big golf course, and it is! Generous landing areas and very large greens are the standard here. The rye grass overseed keeps the tees, fairways and greens - green. It also adds a bit of a challenge with no or very little roll and greens that are difficult to putt accuratly. In short a very nice golf facility. Oh, I had the area's best pulled pork sandwich for lunch. It was the special of the day!
Course is great. Long and challenging but rewarding too. The front nine is a beast and the back nine offers more birdie opportunities it seems like.
As challenging as the course is due to length, it is also very rewarding. The landing areas off the tee are nice and wide and there is plenty of space around the greens if you don't hit a long iron on perfect line. Even if you aren't a long hitter, the course is very nice and challenging with big greens that are roll nice. I would recommend this course. Great setting.
Best course in the area.
Played every course in the area, and by far this is my favorite. No condos or houses in play, very fair landing areas, greens are great. Usually lower cost, because of distance from beach.
Seneic holes, fair amount of sand, not really a lot of water in play.
Variety of tees for everyone. Make sure you pick the right one, course can play very long.
Great practice and warmup area.
Odd Conditions
I found the course conditions very weird. Because its the longest course in Florida you'd expect it to be hard and fast, but it was quite the opposite. Every drive (or lay-up shot) would hit and come back! I love playing long courses but if you get no roll on the fairways, then its quite tough.
That being said, the scenery was nice and the greens were in good shape. Again a little slow for my liking but no dead spots, or issues. Traps and most of the tee boxes were also in good shape.
A very challenging golf layout that lets you believe you are alone in the woods on many of the holes.
This is a great layout with more than enough challenge for the average golfer. Many of the holes require a very accurate approach to avoid the traps guarding the greens. Generous landing area for tee shots but also guarded by bunkers in many positions.
Great course.very interesting lay out..huge property,huge fairways,huge greens
This was my first time at WSD. I've played most all the courses in the Destin area. I rank this one in my top 5 coures in this area. Staff was very nice and accomadating. Will play it agian on my next trip to Destin.
Compared to other near by courses Windswept is a great value.
Windswept Dunes has big open fairways and inventive challenges on almost every hole. It's a fun place to play, but move up a tee to really enjoy it. I have played here several times a year since it opened and it is always kept in good shape winter, spring, summer and fall. The discounted prices you can find on golf now.com make it worth the drive.
Wide fairways dune lined . Use the right tees very little roll
First time playing in Florida in November. Fairways had been overseeded and had taken well. Might be the best fairways I have ever played. Greens crusty but putted fine, Fairly fast. Wide fairways with dunes, no houses on the side. Great look. May have helped that I played well but I loved the course. Enough trouble to avoid but if you watch where you are going believe every level will enjoy this course.
You have to PLAY WINDSWEPT
To be honest the last time I booked I spaced out and missed playing :( BUT I have played this course several times and you will surely enjoy it no matter what set of tee's you choose. GOOD LUCK from the back!! I called the course and mentioned that I had forgotten my tee time and they were nice enough to say stop out and we'll work something out. Now that has something to say for the course!!!
Great course
Great value and always a great time. We will be back again and again, thanks.
Dry conditions, lack of attention to detail.
Course was in need of some water. Greens were very hard. Every on-course ball washer was dry.
Good experience....
Just in outlying area... Hope others research this course when they are in Panama City Beach...Not a bad drive and very reasonablely priced compared to those closer to Destin and the city of P.C.
Very Disappointed
I am a 1 handicap and played this course at the recommendation of a friend. I went early on a Saturday morning and played as a single. After arriving at my ball in the first fairway, I knew I was not going to like the course. The fairways were cut to the length of semi-rough. This meant that I got absolutely no roll from my drives. On all but two par 4s, I had to hit a hybrid for my approach shot and I played the appropriate tees (again, no roll with my tee shots). The greens were also disappointing as they were INCREDIBLY SLOW.
I believe the course was supposed to play about 6,800 yards from the tees I played. Since the fairways were cut like semi-rough, the course played more like 7,500, and maybe more. The only positive thing I can say is that I thought the layout was nice. However, based on the condition of the course when I played, I will never play it again.
