great mountain course!
very difficult as most mountain courses are. You need skill and some luck to score well here. A beautiful course that I would love to play more often.
Solid course
A little off the beaten path. However, a nice track for this Houstonian.
Great Views - Poor Grrens
The course was wide open. Played as a single until the 4th hole when I caught up to others. Then waited for another single to join up with. Tee boxes and fairways great!! Greens not so much. There were many dead spots that effected putting. Not a great putter so not so much!!! LOL!!! Elk have been visiting the course and there was evidence on greens and fairways if you know what I mean!! Had a GREAT time as the staff was friendly and accommodating, because I got there 10 minutes late. I definitely would play there again and make the 40 minute drive from Colorado Springs.
Nice course, Amazing views of Pikes Peak
I really enjoyed the course and had a great time playing it. Great course with amazing views of Pikes Peak in the background. If you love good courses with great views and perfect weather. Play this one.
Beautiful Setting!
I would love to rate this course all Excellent since it's such a beautiful setting with Pikes Peak in the background of many holes. However, at 8,500 feet with summer nights often in the 40s, getting and keeping the greens in "perfect" shape is a real challenge compared to lower level courses.
It's a pleasure to play, especially playing against the open course, low handicap bombers whose idea of golf is to hit it as far as possible and no matter where it goes find it and hit it again as hard as you can.
This course is open enough to be considered a fair challenge but at the same time if you can't hit it straight...bring lots of golf balls.
Great layout, poor conditions
The good: the course has a great layout. Definitely a risk/reward type course, with some nice payoffs from long straight drives.
Most of the course is well kept. Aside from the greens. The greens. Ugh. If there aren't dead patches everywhere, then the grass is half an inch long -its like they're afraid to cut the grass. It bothers me that they don't care enough to sand the dead patches, and at least try to get them back to normal. With all the rain this spring and early summer i can't believe they have dead patches. Every course in the state is in the best condition in the last ten years - EXCEPT here. A shame.
For a golf now deal of $10-15, its worth the drive from colorado springs. I wouldn't pay a cent more than $15 to play this course though. It is in no way, shape, or form a $50-60 course.
Do not waste your money
Terrible course conditions for the money. Greens were in terrible shape for the middle of the summer. Played on better courses for the same price or even less at times.
Try it
I read some reviews about this course and found one in particular unfair. It's not that bad in fact very enjoyable. This person wrote about the cart paths being dangerous. When I played they had done some work on them so not dangerous. About the Golf course it has some very challenging holes mainly driving. I played it from the black tees and shot 83. Now the Greens have some bare spots but around the hole there's ample room to putt. I really enjoyed the par 3's they all play down hill. So give it a try. I'm sure that they will improve the Course with more revenue coming in.
horrible condition
Greens are not worth the time to pull out the putter
Back-9 needs to be closed
Let me start with the front 9. Course was beautiful. No really difficult shots, and fairways fairly wide. Pace was a little slow, but having a tournment that morning backed up everyone else.
Now the back nine. With all the rain Colorado has gotten this summer, the dirt cart paths have been just decimated. Extreme slopes gained water washouts making the dirt cart paths dangerous on various holes (perticular tee box #12, tee box #13and the switchback between green for #14 and tee box #15). Might be time to put some paved cart paths down...current situation, someone is going to get injured. If you walk the course...then you shouldn't have this problem, and the course is fun.
Staff was very friendly and helpful and the beverage cart was running up to the last people on the course.
I would play this course again, but I will no take a golf cart. Too dangerous for this golfer.
Good course
It's a fantastic mountain course. It's challenging and narrow, so bring extra balls. Greens and cart paths weren't in great shape, but everything else was pretty good. (They just hired a new groundskeeper, so maybe the greens will improve.)
Could be a much better course
It's been a number of years since I played it. My only concern before going was the condition of the greens. Colorado has had ample moisture this year so all the greens on every other course I played were excellent. Just as my past experience the greens were well below par with multiple sand and bare spots. In my mind there is no reason for this. Also, the starter seemed not in touch as to how send people off. I was supposed to be with a 3 some, but they arrived a couple minutes before me and were already teeing off. The starter told me to go alone. luckily there was another single so we paired up, otherwise it would have been a long afternoon .
Course just ok.....
This course is in a beautiful setting, however the conditions of the course were not so beatiful. Fairways were not well maintained nor cart paths. Greens were probably the most disappointing. Can handle rough and unkept fairways but the greens need to be able to roll. These greens were bumpy, lacking in grass, needing a lot of attention. Could not even make a decent attempt at a normal putt. Made the round completely uninteresting.
Tight, bumpy with a side of mud
Greens are in rough shape - guessing too much water in the spring. Front 9 is really tight - virtually no driver needed if you hit it above average length. Cart paths are minefields after the rains.
Shining Mountain
The course is beautiful, lush fairways and rough. The greens were in a little less than ideal shape. The views are spectacular.
No mowers?
If you're considering playing this course, accept from the first hole that the only good thing about it is the scenery. The rough seemed like it hadn't been mowed in weeks. The fairway was very shaggy, and just as long in some areas as other courses first cuts. Then the greens need to just be torn up and reworked all the way through. I really don't like tearing courses apart like this, but this course is not worh paying $5 for in the condition that it is in. Like I said play for the scenery. Not the golf.
Great scenery but...
The greens are a little rough. Nice layout. Nice scenery. The wife didn't like the port a - potties.
Disappointing
We heard good things about this track, but we got there and were immediately disappointed. It was pretty rough, the driving range was a joke, the course was in terrible condition -- the greens didn't seem like they were tended to in weeks. There was construction all over the place. Someone cut in front of us on the back 9 and the pace of play was erratic. For the money, this was not worth it and considering the drive from Co Springs, would never play again.
I am very sorry to hear your experience wasn't very pleasnt, but I encourage you to give Shining Mountain Golf Course a second chance. As of January, 2017, we have new management in every department. We are working non-stop and making fantastic changes to the way we do things here at Shining Mountain. With these changes, we would love a chance to make it up to you.

Very challenging and not as much fun because the rough is much too thick
This course is slow to play because you are always taking too much time searching for your balls. Many of the fairways are too narrow and sloped at a left to right angle which means no matter how well you hit it your ball it ends up going OB or into extremely thick rough and that's if your lucky. Greens are very slow and humungous. But it's inexpensive to play which is a plus. This course could be a very nice mountain golf course if it were cared for better and the rough cleaned up a bit. It has very pretty holes and most of the par threes are very challenging.
Fun Mountain Course
Narrow fairways, long from the back tees, well trapped.
