An old jewel.
A long challenging nine hole with two sets of tees to make it an 18 hole. The Staff is great.
It’s a lot like the Presidio course. I will go back.
Stuff of local legend-
that continues a quirky existence and manifold challenges...it all breaks to the Cow Palace....
Course still recovering
Played a quick 9 before my flight home. High expectations based on write ups about the course. Would like to play it again when it recovers from drought conditions. Looks like that might be a few years.
A little rough gem for the brave and adventurous
Gleneagles is an extremely challenging and strategic layout that is not for beginners nor those wanting flat and straightforward golf. There are varied slopes on virtually all holes and many narrow areas to contend with. The greens are tiny and most have heavy undulations, but are as good of condition as you will find for muni golf. The rest of the course conditions varies from solid and fair to poor to downright ugly with barren spots in fairways and tee boxes with more slope than would be normally anywhere else. This course must be approached with an open mind and should be played several times before having any expectations of scoring near one’s handicap, but you get to play all sorts of shorts off all sorts of lies for a real golfing challenge.
fun 9 holes
We had a fun morning at Gleneagles. Holes were long enough to make 9 holes worthwhile. The guy in the shop was very nice. It got a bi windy but that's normal in SF.
Save your money
This course is treacherous. Wildly overpriced. It’s always in bad shape, the greens are mostly sand. The wind makes the course much more difficult. A small slice turns into a lost ball every time. The fairways are patched with dirt and sand. Walking the course is really challenging because you’re walking on sandy hills. The cart you can rent for $10 doesn’t have straps so my bag fell off many times on bumpy fairways. I had to use two hands to guide it. The staff can be ok some days and others give you attitude if you aren’t familiar with all the rules. After 3 holes I was ready to quit. Stay away, give a better course your business. I wouldn’t play this course for free.
At $29 (resident) we give the loudest bang for your buck. We had just aerated our greens two weeks before this review and there was residual sand on the greens but so necessary. We turned off the water 100 -150 yards off the tees to save water so yes, you gotta strike the ball.
There are easier courses that may suit your game but appreciate you came out to try Gleneagles.
History & Challenge
I appreciate this Jack Fleming layout on so many levels of golf appreciation. Much more than what meets the eyes. Was truly appreciative of the tree shadows of hundreds of golf balls on the right side of the first fairway. A splendid installation!!! Lift back the historical covers on these challenges and much is both revealed and rumoured.
Thank you for your insight and support. While we do not have the resources of our sister municipals (we do not have city employees, equipment or resources) we hope to afford an experience like no other at Gleneagles.
Not what I was expecting
After traversing the sketchy barrack style apartments with the homies guarding the corner I was able to find the single car entrance tucked away up a hill with little to no signage. After gearing up and heading to the small but quaint bar/pro shop/front desk, I stood for five
minutes while the atttendant finished his convo with one of the two other folks in the place about furniture just to get a smug “ what do you need”. Not a hey, not a “hi, how are you doing”. Then I got to the course. Terrible is an understatement. Conditions made for a challenging 9 which was great, but can you at least make a decent path to walk and cut the grass on the green. Just tossing sand everywhere and calling it good seems like a bandaid for the bullet wound that is the lack of care and pride of ownership.
We know our conditions are antithetical to most other municipals we really hate to hear you were not treated well at the front of the shop. Rest assured we appreciate your business and hope you give us another look.
Joejoetops
The course paste very tough as usual but that’s why I keep coming back. I have been playing that course for 40 years.
Thank you for your FIVE STAR review and for loving this course as much as we do.
Go play now.
The course is nice now. With all the recent rains we have had has the course greener than its been in recent times. Some trees down but they have been cleaning up pretty fast. Challenging place with all the elevation changes and slopes.
Thank you for your great review. Most of the trees that fell during the Winter 2023 have been bucked up and cleared. You got it right about the elevation variation and slopes, two important characteristics that makes Gleneagles an incredible course like no other.
Wasted potential
Played this course on a Saturday, guy working the pro shop was a younger man. Friendly and actually had a good time at the course- difficult fun track. I can overlook the poor fairway conditions to support a local course. A few weeks later, I decided to play a round on a rainy, completely empty Monday morning. Show up to check in with an older man at the bar. Tell him I’d like to grab a tee time, he rudely asks if I have a tee time. Repeat that id like to walk on.. “ yeah fine, I guess I’ll allow it.” Keep in mind, I’m the ONLY person at the golf course. Asks if I’ve played here before, told him I’ve played a few weeks ago. “You know the rules around here then?” Confused, I ask him to clarify to which he replies “we have one rule here. You are to play one ball and one ball only. If me or if any of my guys see you playing more than one ball, we’re going to ask you to leave immediately. You got that?” Sure enough, he watched me tee off, arms crossed and watched me play the entire first hole from outside the pro shop. Never have I ever been treated this way in any other course or felt more unwelcome. There’s a reason this course is rarely booked out. It’s a shame because the course has a lot of potential but it’s held back by this “look we’re cool because we have a bar instead of a pro shop” mentality. No shortage of courses here in the Bay Area and this course ranks at the bottom of that list.
You have our sincerest apologies for how you were received at the start. This is not how we train our staff to greet or serve customers. Please know it will not happen again.
We are sorry you had an unfortunate experience with a staff member on your second visit. It sounds like your first visit went very well. We have alerted the starter about this review and appreciate you bringing it to our attention. We can assure you your next visit will be stellar.
GOOD GC
THE GC HAS BAY VIEW. NOT TOO BUSY. YOU PLAY ON THE SLOP.
Thanks for the great review. We are the only golf course in San Francisco with a Bay view because we are the only course on the Southeast side of The City. When the leaders of San Francisco built the golf course they did so because there were already three public courses on the West side, not including two private course. They wanted to spread out the golf courses to all neighborhoods. It was built around the same time as Candlestick Park in 1962. Unfortunately Candlestick is gone but Gleneagles remains because the community continues to play it.
A great Midweek course
Gleneagles GC San Francisco, is an awesome Par 36, 9holes course at the heart of San Francisco. Fairway consist of 2 par 5’s, 5 Par 4’s, and 2 Par3’s.
You also got some challenging winds, slopes, and other elements from time to time.
Thank you for your review! You can use every club in your bag at this nine-holer. Many play nine and find it plenty enough. For the less than a movie ticket, you can go around from another set of tees for nine more to make it 18 holes. This 9 or 18 hole experience will no doubt leave a memory for you unlike any other golf course.
Hi
Don’t play this course in the morning. It’s not well kept and super muddy until noonish. Staff is lit, course is… not the best
We have received over 19 inches of rain in the past four weeks, most in the past 100 years. There are some muddy areas for sure but the golf course as whole is very playable.
Thank you for your FIVE STAR review. The wind comes up in the summer afternoons shifting the course to beast mode. Be prepared to take two more clubs on many measured distances.
