Dye @ MH

Rode the Blues (6568/72.0/136) in 3H mid day. Played the front with Benny and the back with Dr. John. Sunny, fairly calm and around 110.

COVID-19: Clubhouse closed, pro shop open. 1 rider to a cart, ice/water stations closed. No on course services. Insert in Cups. Masks only now required while checking in and if around other people on the course.

Bermuda tees lush and well maintained.

Bermuda fairways firm/lush, nice to play from.

Bermuda rough semi lush, not very tall or overly penal.

Sand traps excellently maintained with nice, fine sand.

Bermuda greens were the only part of the course disappointing. Firm, they putted medium slow and very definitely middle of the summer Bermuda bumpy. Almost no ball marks because of the firmness.

Demanding layout that I like better with each visit. Very few holes w/o water on this course, and the water is often barely off the fairway or green. Moguls, mounds, huge waste bunkers and rail road ties, this layout definitely has the traditional Dye look. Most holes have water left with the trees, mounds and sand right for your tee shots. Only a few holes have water right.

Excellent customer service from all. They provide bottled water since the water stations on the course are closed. All grass driving range with complementary balls plus nice practice chipping/putting areas are well above average, but closed middle of the day for maintenance. Recommended period, but if you like Pete Dye courses, highly recommended.

MH Palmer

Rode the Blues (6499/71.2/127) in 3H mid day playing as a single. Slightly over 100 and clear with little breeze.

COVID-19 measures in place. Mask was required at all times around people. One to a cart. Plastic insert in the cups but the ball would go in. No rakes or water stations open. Snack shop available for take out only. Pro shop open, and they had divot mix on the carts.

The course is firm and very playable, but quite different than the lushness I experienced six weeks ago. Fun layout with a decent amount of water, sand and tall trees. Alot of holes I can grab driver and have a go at it, but there are also a few par 4's that are strategic, layup holes.

Tees okay coverage and divots repaired. But areas are worn down and thin after all the over seed has burned off.

Fairways mostly lush and still nice to play from.

Rough more hit and miss, but still decent. Mowed down to about 2", good POP rough.

Sand traps had thick fine quality sand were still good to play from despite not having rakes and plenty of footprints.

Bermuda greens were in mid summer form. Somewhat bumpy, firm and rolling medium speed.

Customer Service always exceptional here. Quick efficient check-in. Excellent all grass driving range that is closed for maintenance from 10A - 1P daily. I like the layout. No GPS on the basic carts. Recommended.

Dye Challenge

Rode the Blues (6568/72.0/136) in 2.7H mid day as a single. Sunny, fairly calm and in the low 100's.

COVID-19: Clubhouse/pro shop closed. 1 rider to a cart, ice/water stations closed. Ice chests and divot mix bottles removed. Cups raised but ball can sometimes go in. Masks only now required while checking in and if around other people on the course.

Familiar theme here is water left, trees, mounds and sand right for most tee shots. Most holes had water left, several from tee to green. Only a few have water right. Very few holes w/o water on this course, and it is usually barely off the fairway or green. Throw in the usual Dye moguls, mounds, huge waste bunkers and rail road ties, and this layout definitely has the traditional Dye look.

Tees lush and well maintained.

Bermuda Fairways firm/lush, very nice to play from.

Bermuda Rough not very tall or overly penal, but not as consistently lush as the rest of the course. '

Sand traps excellently maintained with nice, fine sand.

Greens were firm, smooth and putted medium fast. Almost no ball marks because of the firmness. Tougher than average to navigate around these green complexes. Decent amount of mounds rather than tiers with run off areas where balls barely off can end up 15 yards off the green.

Excellent customer service from all. They provide bottled water since the water stations on the course are closed. All grass driving range with complementary balls plus a nice practice chipping/putting areas are well above average. Definitely recommended.

Palmer

Rode the Blues (6499/71.2/127) in 2H, 40M early afternoon playing as a single. Slightly over 100 and clear with a 1 club breeze.

COVID-19 measures in place, except this was the first time I was told it was okay to NOT wear a mask on the course since I was playing alone. However, it was made clear that a mask was required at all times around people. Raised cups to ground level, no divot mix, rakes or water stations open. Snack shop available for take out only, pro shop and clubhouse closed to the public.

Tees lush and immaculate with few divots unrepaired.

Fairways lush and nice to play from.

Rough lush and mowed down to about 2", very good POP rough.

Sand traps had thick fine quality sand were still good to play from despite not having rakes and plenty of footprints.

Bermuda greens fully healed and rolling smooth @ medium speed. Firm, so expect rollout.

Cutomer Service always exceptional here. Quick efficient check-in Excellent all grass driving range was closed for maintence. Fun and playable layout with a decent amount of water, sand and tall trees. Alot of holes I can grab driver and have a go at it, but there are also a few par 4's that are layup holes. I like the layout. This course has beautiful seasonal flowers planted that adds color to the landscape. No GPS on the basic carts. Highly recommended.

Shore Tournament Course

Rode the ANA tees (6783/73.1/136) in lightly less than 3H as a single mid morning. The weather was clear, fairly calm and in the low 100's.

Pro Shop and Clubhouse closed to the public. One to a cart, raised cups where the ball would still usually barely go in. No rakes, divot mix, ice chests or water stations on the course. Bathrooms open and they provided complementary bottled water. Masks only required when around people, they said okay to remove mask on the course if not around anyone.

I like this layout more with each visit. Very fun and challenging course with alot of water to navigate. Huge trees line nearly every hole, with several very tall trees prominently sticking out where the fairway curves. Numerous forced carries over lakes.

Tees lush and well maintained.

Fairways lush and firm, very nice.

Rough 2-3" deep, lush and thick.

Sand traps had good quality sand and very decent considering no rakes.

Bermuda greens are firm, smooth and medium fast, like putting on a pool table. Irons would make more of a dent than ball marks and you did not want to be putting or chipping from above the hole.

Customer service excellent from all encountered. Easy check-in, the cart guys were efficient and friendly. Basic carts do not have GPS. Nice all grass driving range with complementary balls that was closed for maint. today. No drink cart today. Both the layout and the playing conditions are excellent. Highly recommended.

Shore

Rode the ANA tees (6783/73.1/136) in 2.5H as a single mid day. The weather was clear, fairly calm and in the low 100's.

Masks required, Pro Shop and Clubhouse closed to the public. One to a cart, raised cups where the ball would still usually barely go in. No rakes, divot mix, ice chests or water stations on the course. Bathrooms open and they provided complementary bottled water.

Huge trees line nearly every hole, with several 80' tall trees prominently sticking out where the fairway curves. Many forced carries over lakes, and I can no longer hit the ball high enough to go over these massive trees. Both the layout and the playing conditions are excellent. Very fun and challenging course with alot of water to navigate.

Tees lush and well maintained.

Fairways lush and firm, very nice.

Rough 3" deep, lush and thick. Punitive to play out of and tough to find balls with all the leaves.

Sand traps had good quality sand but were getting compacted and needed raking.

Greens got rated a 10/10 for the 2nd straight visit. Firm, smooth and medium fast, like putting on a pool table. Irons would make more of a dent than ball marks and you did not want to be putting or chipping from above the hole.

Customer service excellent from all encountered. Easy check-in, the cart guys were efficient and friendly. Basic carts do not have GPS. Nice all grass driving range with complementary balls. No drink cart today. Highly recommended.

Palmer

Rode the Blues (6499/71.2/127) in 2H, 50M early afternoon playing as a single. Slightly over 100 and clear with a breeze that was welcome.

Tees lush and immaculate with few divots unrepaired.

Fairways lush and nice to play from.

Rough lush and mowed down to about 2", very good POP rough.

Sand traps had thick fine quality sand were still good to play from despite not being raked today.

Bermuda greens had been punched during the closed period with small tynes, probably about 2 weeks ago? Almost completely healed. Mostly smooth, firm and they putted medium speed.

Customer service always exceptional here. Quick efficient check-in and I cannot say enough good things about Teal, one of the pro's @ MH. Late on a Saturday afternoon and she was out delivering cold bottled water to players on the course since the normal water stations were closed. Nice touch and much appreciated!

Excellent all grass driving range was open. Very playable and fun layout with a decent amount of water, sand and tall trees. However, except for several par 4's that are more strategic than length holes, this is a grip it and rip it course. Good collection of par 3's and enjoyable par 5's. This course has beautiful seasonal flowers planted that adds color to the landscape. No GPS on the basic carts. Highly recommended.

Palmer gem

Rode the Blues (6499/71.2/127) in 3H, 40M mid morning. Paired with Bob/Walt, excepcional guys to be matched up with. We enjoyed perfect golfing conditions, around 70, clear and calm. This layout fits my eye, very playable and fun. Decent amount of water, sand and tall trees, but this is a grip it and rip it course overall. Several par 4's that are not driver holes, good collection of par 3's and I really liked the par 5's. Tees lush and immaculate, all divots were repaired. Fairways lush and very nice to play from. Rough lush and mowed down to about 2". Sand traps were over the top great. Not only the way they were raked and maintained, but the thick fine quality sand was excellent to play from. Greens were smooth, firm and putted medium speed. Suprisingly firm a day after heavy rains, I had a mediocre putting day but the greens were great. Customer service always excepcional here. Plenty of wayer stations on the couse and an open snack stand at the turn. This course is as immaculately maintained as any I have played maybe ever. Beautiful seasonal flowers planted that would remind you of IW Celebrity or Langdon Farms. Lots of attention to detail, workers were out hand edging the boundaries of all the sand traps. Excellent all grass driving range. No GPS on the basic carts. Highly recommended from both a layout and especially a playing condition perspective.

Dye Challenge IS challenging!

Rode the Blues (6568/72.0/136) in 3H, 20M with Dan, excellent guy to get matched up with. Sunny, fairly calm and in the upper 80's made for great golfing conditions.

I am told the members do not care for this Pete Dye design and mostly play the other M.H.C.C. courses. Easy, this course is not. Familiar theme here is water left, trees, mounds and sand right off most tees.
If you have played other local Dye courses like LQ Dunes, Westin MH Dye and PGA West Stadium, you know what to expect, Except there is more water here.

Over a dozen holes had water left, several from tee to green. A few had water right. Very few holes w/o water on this course, and it is usually barely off the fairway. Throw in the usual Dye moguls, mounds, huge waste bunkers and rail road ties, and it definitely has the traditional Dye look.

Tees were lush and well maintained.

Fairways were firm/lush, very nice to play from.

They do not overseed the rough, so it is mostly dormant Bermuda with other grasses throw in. not very tall or overly penal, but it's not nearly in the condition of the rest of the course.

Sand traps excellently maintained with nice, fine sand.

Greens were excellent. Firm, smooth and medium fast. Almost no ball marks because of the firmness. Tougher than average to navigate around these green complexes, they have a decent amount of mounds rather than tiers with run off areas where balls barely off can end up 15 yards off the green.

They space the tee times really well here. Last group usually on the green before they have the next group tee off. Excellent customer service from the valet to pro shop/Starter all the way back to valet. Open snack shop on the course, no cart person today. They provide bottled water in your cart and there are adequate water stations on the course. All grass driving range with nice practice chipping/putting areas are well above average. Definitely recommended.

Dinah Shore

Rode the ANA tees (6783/73.1/136) in 4.5H using Club Corp. Matched up with a nice 3some, we played in clear, breezy conditions in the low 80's.

Very fun and challenging layout with alot of water to navigate. Several holes have inlets where the water juts out 1-2 times into the fairway. Tough course to judge how much you could bite off until you play here a few times. Huge trees line nearly every hole, with several 80' tall trees prominently sticking out where the fairway curves. They are IN play.

Tees lush and well maintained.

Fairways lush and firm, very nice.

Rough 3-4" deep, lush and thick. Punitive to play out of and tough to find balls with all the leaves.

Sand traps had good quality sand and were very nicely maintained.

I rated the greens a 10/10 and I RARELY give anything a 10. Firm, smooth and medium fast, like putting on a pool table. Irons would make more of a dent than ball marks and you did not want to be putting or chipping from above the hole.

Customer service excellent from all encountered. Easy check-in, starter, the cart guys and valet were and all efficient and friendly. Basic carts do not have GPS. Nice all grass driving range with complementary balls. No drink cart, which on a busy day I found surprising for a high end private club.

Many forced carries over lakes, and I can no longer hit the ball high enough to go over these massive trees. The LPGA plays a major here and I can see why. Both the layout and the playing conditions are top notch. Highly recommended.

The greens rolled ok, but were slow. The layout is not interesting. The value is not there.

That said, this option was very convenient for me as I was staying at the hotel on property with my wife and newborn. I played every day at 6:30 in the spirit of time.

I hate to tell you but you didn’t play the Dinah Shore Course at Mission Hills Country Club. That’s where the LPGA just finished playing the ANA Inspiration, they’re first major 2 days before. You probably played the ‘Westin’ Mission Hills right next door totally separate and not affiliated at all!

A bucket list

This course turned out to be my second favorite course among all the courses I've played (250). Yes, it is that good. I even rated this course above Pebble Beach due to the cost difference. The experience, starting with the staff, the course condition, the layout, the playability, the challenges, ... Awe, a great course in the desert. I have a better appreciation of LPGA players after playing the course. I'll be back later this year for some revenge.

Bucket list

Parking: mostly valet so be considerate when you pack your golf club in the trunk.

Facility: Elegant and spacious. Very classy. The open feel of the halls, the view from the restaurant and the well stocked pro shop.

Staff: Very courteous and helpful. Professionalism.

Course: This is a treat. I've watched the ladies play their annual major couple of times so I was a bit familiar with the course layout. But, as one can imagine, things look a bit different standing on the tee boxes. The tournament tees plays out to 6600 yds and the course isn't as tight as I had thought. The greens weren't at tournament speed so I can be thankful of that. Overall a great experience. Will definitely play again.

Dye-abolical Golf at its best!

Pete Dye is a great course designer but also seems to want to make you love him or hate him throughout your round. The Pete Dye Challenge course at Mission Hills Country Club is a very difficult course. It challenges the best players and separates the good golfers from the great ones. Dyes classic use of moguls and water make this course intimidating but very memorable as well. At least half of the par-4 and par-5s have water down the left side of the fairway, with only one hole that has water on the right. The moguls and rolling mounds force you to aim for the fairway and if you miss, you could be severely punished. If you enjoy a challenge, PDC at MHCC is right for you, but be prepared to swallow your pride, take your medicine and shoot a slightly higher score as Pete Dye takes you on a beautiful course through the desert!
