Newport Beach (Calif.) Country Club is a classic shotmaker's course. Designed by William Bell in 1952, the layout is defined by narrow perennial rye fairways that are well-framed by towering pine trees, making it difficult to overpower. The golf course's undulating Poa annua greens, which tend to break toward the Pacific Ocean, can also be difficult to read. Set along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway, Newport Beach C.C. has been modified twice in its history: by Harry Rainville in 1973 and Ted Robinson in 1985.
