The course is in arguably the best shape it has been in for a while. I’ve been playing here periodically for about five years and the fairways are as lush and weed-free as I can remember. The greens look poorer than they play because of a recent infestation of crow’s feet on the bent grass surfaces. They roll very good, however. There have been some extensive tree removal on the right side of the second hole and left side of No. 6. The removals weren’t voluntary, as the trees had died, but it drastically changes how the holes are played.

Renovations continue at TCC

Management continues to invest in improving the course, evidenced today by new flagsticks and a nice wooden footbridge crossing the 17th fairway.

The biggest change, however, is in the transition of the greens from Bent to Bermuda. Four holes (Nos. 1, 3, 7 and 15) have been interseeded with Auburn University victory Bermudagrass. Once it overtakes the Bent, the putting surfaces should be heartier, though grainier. If these four greens are successful, look for the rest of the greens to be changed as well.

Recent weather has made maintenance difficult

Course maintenance has been a challenge with the recent freezing temps. So many of the greens reside in shady areas, and only a few get covered up at night, which has led to frozen greens that have had a hard time thawing. Earlier this weekend only about 6 holes were playable, which resulted in a composite course.

Today, however, all 18 were playable. Unfortunately, they haven't been able to get a mower on the greens in over a week, resulting in poa annua-like greens. Footprints marred the surfaces and they were really slow, making scoring difficult. Usually, the greens are the hallmark of this course.

I anticipate this will likely be resolved early this week, as temps are projected to stay well above freezing for the foreseeable future.

Bunkers renovated

There aren't many bunkers on the course, but they have historically been lacking sand, rough around the edges and infested with yellow jackets. However, they have recently been overhauled and look great. Just another one of the improvements TCC has made that has shined the course up. Greens were good as usual. Fairways are dormant but played firm and fast.

Addition of rough adds new element

Solar eclipse round!

Course improvements continue. New tee markers and flags are a good investment. The newly-installed sprinkler system has not only improved fairways, but given TCC something it has never had for as long as I can remember: rough. There is a clear first cut of Bermuda that can make approach shots and chips around the green more difficult than before.

Bent greens were solid overall.

Would be nice to have more than one water cooler on the course. Right now, there is only one at the convergence of the 6th and 16th tees.

Recent investment paying off

The new sprinkler system is already paying dividends and has given this course a facelift since I was here last. Fairways are much healthier and the thin, bare spits that were pervasive on many holes are gone. Great lies. Greens still good, despite heat. Wish they would mow a little more frequently to keep weeds out of fairways and tee boxes cut around the aprons. Excellent walking value.

Fairways coming along

There are rumblings about potential interest from the city of a Trussville or city of Moody purchasing this course, and other rumblings about a potential redesign to some of the holes. Who knows if either will cone to fruition. What has changed to improve the course is fertilizer application to the fairways for the first time in a decade and a half, and an in-ground sprinkler system in place. This should continue to strengthen the fairways, though I'd like to see the weeds eradicated. Greens were solid, even if a bit slow. This heat strains the bentgrass here. $25 walking rate here is a good value if you can hoof it.

Improved fairways compliment consistently-good greens

This parkland style course is mostly supported by locals. It is very walkable, with minimal elevation change, making it desirable for seniors and juniors. However, you won't find many flat lies except for the handful of holes that hug the Cahaba River. The fairways here are usually hard and thin, but recent overseeding of many of the landing areas in fairways have taken and looks better than I've seen it in a while. Great job. The handful of bunkers, however, could use some work. One thing that can always be counted on about TCC is that the bent grass greens are superb and deceptively fast for a course of this caliber. The strength of this par-71 layout is the five par-threes. They are a good mixture of uphill, downhill and straightforward holes, and both nines end with uphill par 3s with multi-tiered greens.
