Thornton Golf Club was originally established in 1921. The course is a scenic, heavily wooded parkland course with excellent greens.
The flat land is easy to walk and is bound by the River Ore, which comes into play on the par-3 14th. This hole is the first of a very challenging final five holes, which are shorter than most on the course but are very tricky.
From there, "Huttons Gap," is a tricky 348-yard par 4, followed by two short par 4s that play 220 and 260 yards, respectively. Brains outwit brawn, however, and many long hitters have ruined their round getting too greedy.
"Gully" finishes out the round and, while longer than the previous short par 4s, is much more straight forward. The course plays at 5,900 yards total.
Weekday play is unrestricted, but weekends are limited at Thornton.
The new clubhouse has first rate facilities. Changing accommodations for men and women are spacious. Shower facilities and social lounges are welcoming. A strict dress code is enforced on the course as well as the clubhouse.
The course is located two miles off A92 on the B9130 midway between Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes.
