Duke's Course in St. Andrews

Description

The Duke's Course is a new course in the Kingdom of Fife, dating back to just 1995. The course is a classic inland design and is characterized by small undulations and groups of small pot bunkers often built into mounds providing very high lips.

Among the other signs of modern architecture is the length, which is one of the few courses in Fife that stretches longer than 7,100 yards from the back tees. Former British Open champion Peter Thomson designed the Duke's Course, inaugurated by the Duke of York.

It's one of the more expensive rounds, but is open to the public at all times. Weekday greens fees are 90 pounds as well as on weekends.

The course begins with a short but tricky par 5, playing less than 500 yards. There are three par 4s longer than 400 yards on the front side and none of the par 4s go below 340 yards.

"Denhead," the 140-yard par 3, can be very difficult to judge in high winds. "Feddinch" is the giant par 5 on the backside, playing 578 yards and requires three good pokes to reach the green. "Ice House" is the finishing hole and is a challenging par 4 but is a birdie opportunity compared to the course's many difficult, longer par 4s.

The club offers superb views across the St. Andrews bay and is located three miles south of the town's centre. The Duke's Course hosted the Glenmuir PGA Club Championship in 2000.

Dining is offered all day in the glamorous clubhouse. Locker rooms for men and women are huge. The practice facilities include a sand bunker, grass tees, short game area and a large putting green. Carts are available, as well as pull carts.

The Duke's continues it's improvements under the watchful eye of Herb Kohler. The soil is much sandier and drier, and the rough is much shorter now since I last saw it in 2006. If you haven't seen the ... more»
