The Old Course at St. Andrews is considered to be the birthplace of golf, with evidence of play on the links land beside the town dating back to the 1500s. Today, the golf course remains a challenge with 112 bunkers and golf's largest greens, 14 holes share a green with another (and each combination of holes, like No. 2 and No. 16 add up to 18). It also has a unique, counter-clockwise routing, which means out-of-bounds is usually right of the fairway, while another hole's fairway is left. Today, it's the most consistent Open Championship host, staging the event every five years.
