Balgove re-opened in 1993 as part of a general remodeling at St. Andrews. The course was constructed at the same time as the new 18-hole course, the Strathtyrum, and it was opened in June of 1993.
It's a beginner's course that gives children priority over adults in the popular summer months. The course measures just 1,503 yards and is a par 30, perfect for those too young or unwilling to accept the challenge at the more difficult Old Course or Jubilee.
When the Balgove originally opened in 1972, it was 2,085 yards. Part of the course was then taken over in the 1989-90 remodeling of the Eden Course. Plans for a redesigned Balgove Course in 1990 was to have nine holes, a length of 1,700 yards and would be a par 31. It would finally be shortened to its current length and par.
During school summer holidays, the rule used to be adults could only play the course if accompanied by a child. That rule is no longer making Balgove a popular choice for beginners of all ages.
