Muirfield is the home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, which is the world's oldest golf club with roots that date back to 1744. Golf was first played at Muirfield in 1891 on 16 holes designed by Old Tom Morris. Since then, the golf course has expanded by more than 50 acres, well past the stone walls that surrounded the original layout. Harry Colt redesigned the layout in 1923, rerouting the now 18-hole design into two loops of nine holes with one playing within the other, but in the opposite direction. There's no way to hide from the blustery winds no matter which direction you're facing. The course has remained largely unchanged over the years, standing the test of time as one of the finest examples of the British Isles golfing tradition.
